I just read an articel in Newsweek about testing in the Olympics this year. Seems like the athletes " will be subject to both random out-of-competition tests and blood tests. The IOC modified their charter last year to allow blood tests, and any athlete who fails to sign a form agreeing to submit to them cannot compete" "...Concerns about the IOC's commitment to drug-free games resurfaces at last year's IOC meeting on doping. White House drug czar Gen. Barry McCaffrey, who attended, says he encountered "an enormous animosity from Samaranch(head IOC guy) and crew". And although McCaffrey and others at the meeting demanded and independent testing body, the resulting World Anti Doping Agency is run my IOC members" "...In Atlanta three or four urine samples that tested positive for steroids vanished..."i don't know what happened to them" said Dr. Don Catlin of UCLA " I passed them somehwere upstream from me" " ".. although he was using $12,000 worth of steroids a year from 1995 to 1999, Reiterer says, he never once tested positive..." "... in his book 'Positive' Reiterer says that the authorities timed doping tests so drugs would not be detectable....in 1997 and Olympic administrator tipped him off asbout what levels of various banned substances were allowed in the tests..." Interesting

think about how the olympics or something like the nfl would suffer if they went all out on testing. . . they have to let alot of it slide but at the sametime, they have to nail a few to look like the testing is on the up and up. i thought i remember reading an artical that said they would never use blood testing in the olympics because it would be too expensive. but i figured they said that because they knew that if they used any real sophisicated tests that there wouldn't be an olympics. | ||

Yup goes into effect in this olympics at least that's what they say in the article, they say they're going to conduct a random 400 blood and urine tests out of the 10200 athletes. If you're on epo the blood test they have can pick it up within 20 days of use.

I am personally against testing for anabolics. But I do believe in recreational drug testing, no offense Mav, Moe Dand, and Thick Dawg. I think behind a clever testing front, the IOC should develope an unkown, secretive counceling unit to help athletes safely use these drugs, because the Olympics, or any sport for that matter, will never be clean. THey should stage a few 'fake athletes' as testing positive though because they would never earn public support for an anabolic couseltation program, they could simply pay the 'fake athletes' large sums of money to compinsate for slight public humiliation. Obviously my idea has a lot of holes in it, but I'm sure that the IOC could take my idea and make it into something that would work. that my friends is my .02 cents ------------------ |
