My roommate thinks it's all about getting the protein in. He says you get the Kcal just because you're eating for protein. I tell him he couldn't grow as fast on a moderate Cal/high protein diet as well as High Kcal/High protein.
Can someone prove that mother fucker WRONG!!!

It's all about what your looking for. Obviously, the more calories you eat the more you'll grow. If you are trying to watch your bodyfat though, high protein, moderate calories would be more beneficial.

You are technically correct. He MAYBE correct if he utilizes regular food as his source of protein, since this usually contains either carbs or fats or a combination of these, which will increase the total caloric density of his daily intake. He is incorrect if he is trying to utilize only protein powders or low fat meats, like tuna or chicken breasts, which do not contain other macronutrients. A high protein, moderate to low carb diet will affect the metabolism of his protein, in this case. Since the body will not be getting adequate "protein sparing" macronutrients, the body will become effecient at oxidizing amino acids for energy and not for repair and growth. Excess calories along with adequate protein is required for maximal growth, neither is successful alone.

I hope I am understanding what you are asking.

The body needs protein to build muscle. The body needs carbs to burn as fuel to build the muscle. Not enough carbs and the body breaks into the protein for fuel. This you don't want. You want most of the protein to be used in the building and repair of muscle. The carbs you want to be used to fuel the body and the whole process of breaking down the protein and sending it where it is needed to the building and repairing of muscle.

Any left over carbs will be stored to fat. So a high protein moderate carb diet is the way that I go. When cutting or dieting down I go for the high protien low carb.

Hope this helps you.

Peace.

It all depends on the person. Personally, I always tend to put more stress on proteins than on calories especially since I've put on almost 10 pounds of fat on my cycle. I assume you guys are in college, and for the most part, guys in college eat plenty of calories to grow on (at least I do). So I very rarely supplement my protein with diet as I eat/drink enough throughout the day to keep me growing at night. If he's growing than he must be doing something right.

Yeah I dont use protein shakes either. I find that I dont get as fat when I get the protein I need from food. They really need to do some more studies on shakes, I really dont think the body absorbs as much as they claim-

Here's a fact...Make your own conclusions from here on. But the truth is, it's plain stupid to not take in enough carbs when on a bulking or even just trying to gain lean mass...Dieting is a different story.

When a diet is high in protein and low in carbs, it will convert some of the protein into glucose to use it for energy...So if you don't get enough carbs when you bulk, your body will use the protein for energy, that would normally come from carbs...So, some of the protein that would be available to rebuild muscles is being used for energy instead.
