I found this quote on their website Most people do not require extra protein such as whey protein. However, athletes in training sometimes take approximately 25 grams of whey protein per day. No evidence indicates that protein improves athletic performance. what the hell are they talking about..25 grams? for an ant maybe..i dont get it

I like reading up here and you know I was taking some kick ass protein with some other stuff in it too but when I ran out I seemed to feel starved and my recovery time between sets took longer and I stopped gaining weight. but I am back on now thank goodness. protein is secessary for muscle growth. and even if it is only a mind gimmic aren't you supposed to be hyped and feeling good about the workout. knowing that I am taking stuff not to speak of but it does help my mentality and I get kick ass workouts. ------------------

Ponder this one.....I decided to test the whole protein theory on myself. I had surgery about three years ago. I basically could not strain for a month, hence no lifting. And because of the surgery, I could hardly eat for the first two weeks of that month layoff. So needless to say, I lost weight and strength. The example I will use here is parallel bar dips as my primary chest workout. Back then, at a weight of 155 pre-surgery, I could do 285 for a full stretch. After I recovered, I could only max at about 225 at a bodyweight of 145. I had always wanted to do an experiment like this, and I figured that this was the best time to settle the issue with myself once and for all. After a low-protein diet and 6 weeks later, I got my max back to 270. I was eating between .5-.7 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight. And I managed to put 6 lbs back that I had lost. My diet was mostly carbs. Ever since, protein has not been that big of a priority, but I still take in 1g/lb of bodyweight. Right now, I am on day 18 of my current cycle, eating about 1g/lb at ~2700 calories/day, and I weighed in at 190...up 20lbs since the start plus a 50lb increase on my parallel bar dip rep-weight. Plus my background in nutrition/metabolism studies backs up my conclusion. Just something to ponder....and for everyone to consider the placebo effect. Hey BChemist my man. You are talkin 0.5 grams per pound at approx. 150 lbs. Thats around 3 times what the GNC experts are recommending. When most people say athlete they are not talking about people who are doing SERIOUS HEAVY weight training. They are talkin' about cardio dorks. zeke_b

I think that quote was taken out of context. They mean 25g of supplemental protein, other than what the RDA recommends.

BChemist I think you are correct in what you say about the whole protein issue. Below is a copy of a post I put on the diet board. Ok I said I was going to find an article describing the problems with eating too much protein in one of the bodybuilding magazines I have. however the article is so damn long it would take me all day to write it. However there is an article on the Testosterone web site that does explain some of the points brought up by the magazine article. go to: Remember the supplement companies thrive on misinformation. If bodybuilder X who has a contract with supplement company Y tells you that he eats 500 or 600g of protein per day he has either been told to say that or he is on his way to a hospital bed. One example of the latter springs to mind "Mike Francous" the guy would eat 20 chicken breasts per day and what happened him? He ended up in hospital having to get a large part of his intestines removed. I guess to some professional bodybuilders it is their way of explaining away why they are so big. However Dorian made a great comment about these maniacs who claim to eat 8,000 - 10,000 calories per day and 500 - 600 g of protein. He said these guy's must be over 7 feet tall or else they must have the digestive system of an elephant, and thats coming from one of the biggest bodybuilders of all time. I have talked to some other professional bodybuilders and quite a few of them have told me the same thing that they don't really eat that much. Draw your own conclusion.

it wasnt taken out of context,,it has an q&a type area on the site..the question was how much protein do athletes need?

The biggest misconception that people have about protein is that the body can only metabolism about 35-40 grams each meal. Extra protein with either be excreted through the kidneys (hence the reason some "experts" denounce the high-protein diet as being dangerous for the kidneys) or it's saved by the body by converting it to fat. That's why it's important for us to get five to seven smaller meals in a day... keep those protein levels constant, keeping a positive nitrogen balance in the body at all times. This has been verified by many experiments. So, average six meals a day at 35 grams of protein each, that's 210 grams of protein evenly spead out though the day that the body can actually use! Three meals at about 75 grams is just not as beneficial.
