Just what the doctor ordered. I took the last week off from the gym and diet. Ate like a pig and drank like a fish, no training no nothing.

Ihave to say I had the best workout in a long time tonight. I can not remember when the last time was that i actually felt a pump in my tri's....but tonight...they still hurt.

SO if you're in a training rut, take some time off, let your body rest.

BPP

Good advice. I always take 7-10 days off after my cycle to give my body a rest.

I did the same 2 months ago because of elbow tendon problems, but when I came back, my workouts felt much better, overall, not just the elbow.

Same, take a weak off to eat like a glutonous pig. I come back stronger every time.

I came off my cycle three weeks ago. I'm on my first week off in four months... I took a shot of 200mg primo to help keep my recent gains, and I'm not going to excercise anything but my thumb to use the remote control. I feel like a lazy worthless piece of shit, but I know I'll feel great when I get back. This post really helped me mentally- this time off shit is hard!

I guess I'm a little different on this question (as usual!). I lose, not gain, both strength and intensity when I take a layoff, either a scheduled one or an accidental one because of injury or travel.

I really think there's an important intervening variable here that consists of the overall degree of fitness, and the training history, of the lifter. The real big, real experienced guys, like BPP and the other guys who have posted to this thread, all seem to do well with a layoff. Less experienced guys with less hypertrophy do not, in my opinion, benefit as much, if at all, from a layoff. I've been lifting seriously for coming up to five years, but I still go really flat when I take a layoff. I pretty much avoid them now, because it takes a couple of week,s even longer, to get back to the point where I left off before the layoff.

My $.02. Maybe this just shows how people are different.

Bjaarki...The first week back, you probably will have lost some strength. But, you get a monster pump and you feel much better because your body is rested...The strength comes back within a couple weeks.

I'm with Bjaarki on this one, verbatim.

I force myself to take a week off occasionally because I know it's the right thing to do or I just feel that I need it. Everytime I do, I lose a little poundage or maybe a rep or two on the core lifts.

Later,

@LRG, ajc1977:

Could be you bros are right, but I don't think so. I know my body pretty well, and I just don't think I do well with layoffs. I really think the difference of opinion has to do with you bros being better trained in terms of overall fitness and hypertrophy, you guys do well with layoffs, just like Mentzer thinks a few sets will give him a good workout. That's probably true for a guy as big and well trained as him, but not for me or guys like me, who are less experienced and less developed. I really think that undertraining, not overtraining, is the problem with relative newbies like me (even though I've been lifting for five years straight, I'm still a newbie compared to some of you guys). Could be wrong, like I say, but I kinda doubt it.

@LRG: I eat pretty well and relax pretty well, but I'm an academic in a "fast track" setting, so I deal daily with a lot of tension. I haven't had a good night's sleep since I stopped smoking 11 years ago, but that's another story.

Anyway, I just wanted to inject a different kind of opinion here. Looks like at least one of the bros, 1911, agrees.

Be well, brothers.
