Ranger has the best answer to this one, so I'll pass.

I'm sure ATF (ass to floor) squats are best for overall developement, and I used to do them exclusively, but my ass is now fucking huuuuuuuge because of them. So I only go to parallel.

While we're waiting for Ranger, I'll jump in.

IMO, its necessary to go deep, "ass to the grass" if at all possible but, certainly, to "thighs parallel." The only hard part about that, though, is keeping your ego in check so that you're willing to work with a lighter bar in order to use good form.

I won't say that partial reps are never useful, in squats as in any other lift. They are useful, for instance, if you want to work through a sticking point, or if you're having trouble with a joint and don't want to work it through its full range of motion.

But, as a regular thing, I think your question is kind of silly, kman. Go as deep as you can, and be willing to take the time to work up to a heavy bar.

My $.02

I go ass to the floor on squats. I used to go to parallel and ever since switched over my leg strength has dramatically increased.

Go as deep as possible without taking tension off of your quads. In other words ass to the floor but don't pause at the bottom. I learned this the hard way and my knees hurt like a bitch afterwards. Remember "half-ass squats build half-ass legs".

giantset

This sounds like good info to me.I will add that if your knees hurt don't go as deep the next time. Most people can squat deep, yet some will develop knee pain,so shallow is much better then not at all.

Your ass getting big DUE to deep squats is PRIMARLY genetic. I know many people that lift...VERY heavy in fact as well as deep..that have SMALL ASSES. Point? Squatting DEEP is not indicative of a huge ass.
