I want to start using chains on my bench and squat and doing speed-days as recommended in the WSB method. How do you rig the chains on the barbell so they are completely on the floor at the bottom of each rep? For example, on bench press, if you just drape the chains over the end of the barbell, there will still be a couple of feet of chain hanging when the bar is touching your chest, so there is some other way. Somebody help me out. Thanks. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]()

Ahhhhhhhhhh.....Another " Back in the Day " Method....heh heh heh...God I miss'm!!! We used to get an " O " ring and put it center point of the chain...and yes, even at the height of the movement, some of the chain should be touching the ground(helps with stability) The reason behind using chains is to increase the thrust off your chest, and increase bench strength.....when the bar is on your chest, most of the chain will be on the floor, making it lighter... As you press upward...the chain begins to come off the floor increasing the weight the higher you go....this worked great for squats and deadlifts as well.... For added fun...get an empty Beer keg, and clean and press it above your head for sets....slowly add sand each week for increase in power, grip, and thrust....heh heh heh....!!! Now you fuckers know what we did before all the pulleys, straps, and wheels and shit....heh heh heh.....just sweat and pain....!!!! ------------------ Ranger ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Holy shit my gym is like Westside barbell's little cousin. Louie Simmons, chains, bands, speed days, max effort days. LOL, we have like 4 trainers that live breath and eat it. Nationally ranked IPA powerlifters to boot. The O rings are essential in the attachment to the chain. You guys have not experienced intelligent powerlifting until you get under a squat rack, loaded with freakin chains and bands. Not, my cup of tea, but the science behind it works. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Fuck yeah, chains are the shit, like TS said, you've got to have the O rings though!. Extreme methods like this lead to the greatest gains! Another technique that I use, since someone stole the O rings and one on the chains from my gym, is to simply use a safety squat rack for super heavy partials I adjust the pins so that the bars lye about 2-3 inches above my chest. Then I load the bar up (to where it looks scary) and go from there. I also do heavey negatives occasionally using the same apparatus. Powerlifters know there shit when it comes to heavy weights! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

2 years ago I met Lou Simmons and started training in Westside fashion. My best competition BP at the time was 360 at 220 lbs. After a couple years of westside training I went 520 @ 238 in a BP meet, then 525 in a full powermeet at 252. The chains and bands work. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I have a set of chains that I built. I used 5/8" chain. Mind you, that is the diameter of the link material, not the link length. I bought mine at a marine hardware store. I have 4 5' lengths. For attachment, I use some loops (24" total length I think) that are made of 1/4" chain. The loop is adjustable with a bolt, so that it can be used for either benching, or squatting. Attached to the end of the chain is a 5/8 chain hook. The loop chain might weigh a pound or two, but it is not enough to be concerned with. The big chains then of course hang from the hooks. They work great. I use them from time to time...the goofs at my gym just can't quite figure me out... Email me for more details. Thanks for the help. What are your guys' favorite lifts to do for your max effort workouts for your bench press? Also, using WSB, when do you add weight to your speed-day workouts? I mean, obviously on max-effort days you'll add weight according to how fast your 1 RM increases -- but you choose your speed-day weight from your actual bench press 1 RM. See what I mean? ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]()
