I posted this same question awhile back and got no responses, so I'll try it again. I read on a website (nuclear nutrition, I can't really remember) that pros were using plasma expanders, what exactly is the principle behind this, and exactly what kind would they be using (Albumen, that's the only one I can think of offhand) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Glycerol is a plasma expander also.B.B.s use them pre-contest to draw fluids out of the subcutaneous areas and into the bloodstream giving that shrink-wrapped appearance to the skin and also an increase in vascularity due to increased blood plasma levels. Damn, I guess I never placed glycerol in that category, I've used it myself - at the beach, because it makes me vascular as hell ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

PLasma expanders used in the context that you are referring to will draw subcutaneous fluids (called 3rd spacing) and into the vascular compartentments. This will (obviously) osmotically pull the fluids that are blurring your definition and into your blood vessels/veins. Hence the athlete will look thin skinned, tight, and FULL. If you find someone who knows how to administer it it will work like a charm and is SAFER than diuretics-especially since there is only a reallocation of the body's fluids-and not an excretion of them. Also no electrolytes are lost. You will have to find someone who knows how to: - start a large gauge IV (a 20 gauge or less) - knows how to administer this, this HAS to be given IV over at least 15minutes, preferrably over 30 minutes. - You need to keep an eye on your BP if you use this, especially if used more than once in the day- ie before pre-judging and before finals. - have a nurse that KNOWS how to give it. Not a "water guru". For the sake of this post I am referring to giving Albumin and not Hespan. Albumin (referred to as "SPA" or Salt Poor Albumin) is albumin 12.5 grams in a 50 cc vial. Hespan is another volume expander that is derived from amylopectins .Essentially its a very large starch molucule (too large to metabolize). Hespan(6% HetaStarch) usally comes in 500cc IV bags. That type of volume of fluid is not plausible for our topic. I will post more about this later. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Animal-EPO isnt a volume expander its a hormone, but it will increase the RBC's and viscosity of the blood. I dont think its dangerous (terribly) when it used off season and you are well hydrated. Precontest its a death wish. A second job is usally required of EPO users unless its stolen from hosptials or dialysis clinics ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

YMK epo is a synthetic hormone that increases rbc's and the viscosity of the blood. With this being done and of course the person must be well hydrated - it could take the place of a volume expander. If this was to be used for pre-contest the use of another drug ????? I will get the name to you. The use of that product actually makes the blood cells take on a slipery texture - therefore preventing clotting or clogging. Epo is used though. : ) In addition to the glycerol and a few other dex products I.V.. Administration is not very difficult at all - just should have a proper drip rate. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
