http://www.house.gov/english/hoax.htm Watch out for those Internet Hoaxes! Many of you have contacted my office concerning Bill 602P. To say it simply the rumor of any legislation proposed to place additional fees to e-mails are untrue! Whether you have received notice that it is the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) or the U.S. Postal Service, no one is planning to levy any fee against e-mail, nor do they have the jurisdiction to do so. And I would not support any such legislation. The most popular rumors include: The FCC plans to charge 5 cents per e-mail. FALSE The FCC plans to allow phone companies to charge for the time it take to send each e-mail. FALSE The FCC and/or the post office will impose a flat charge on Internet use to cover e-mail. FALSE And I know many more similar rumors are floating through cyber space. Information about the FCC hoax can be found at http://www.fcc.gov/Bureaus/Common_Carrier/Factsheets/ispfact.html The most popular hoax currently hitting peoples inboxes is the one concerning Bill 602P. While its not common knowledge, the first clue that something is not right about this legislation is that house bills do not have letters after them. And H.R. 602 is actually legislation dealing with long-term care insurance Also, the legislation was allegedly introduced by a Congressman Tony Schnell. Let me assure you that there is no one in Congress by that name. On top of that, my office has attempted to contact the law firm in Virginia that supposedly originated the e-mail and was supposedly running the campaign to stop the legislation. You guessed it. The law firm also does not exist, at least in our search of the state of Virginia. The Post Office is also attempting to take a pro-active approach to letting people know about the hoax online at http://www.usps.com/news/press/99/99045new.htm

Thanks for clearing that up, 1911. It wouldn't surprise me in the least though if they did try it.[This message has been edited by Maverik (edited September 01, 2000).]

If you don't think our gov't is trying to come up with a way to charge for the internet, you're living in a dream world. They want to control the internet so badly they come up with hoaxes themselves. How about the one about the FBI needs to invade your privacy and read all e-mails to protect your children from drugs or protect us from terrorists. Who are you 1911.

My reply was nothing more than the first "quick" net reference I found that would answer Animal B's question. Livin' in a dream world re: the gov's desire to control net? Not me brother, I'm not that naive. Lastly, who am I? Just another bro enjoying life my man. Later,

Got it 1911, I mistakenly thought you were paraphrasing. I didn't realize it was a quote.

This story goes around every 6 months or so in some fashion. Its well documented on the Urban Myths web sites. First off, its not "mail", its a service provided by an ISP and routed through other routers and ISP's. It is basically indistinguishable from any other type of data transfer, just a bunch of info shooting through the web. Just because its called e "MAIL" doesnt make it mail... Some of the other stories are charging for ICQ, or forward this ICQ message and theyll give us free ICQ features, and tons of other stuff. If I can find the link I'll post it, theres some funny stuff there!
