Am I the only fucker who still do these? I am the only guy in my gym that EVER does cleans. A guy in my gym told me today, "thats the way people use to workout when I was a little kid." I'm like WTF does that mean?

I do them from time to time...and snatches...and hang cleans...and power cleans. There is nothing better IMO for developing the eXpLoSiVe connection between the mind and the muscles that is nesessary for powerlifting. It's all about variety. Just because Muscle and Fatness magazine doesn't feature them doesn't mean they are no longer usefull. People don't do these excercises because they are difficult! Which is why you also don't see a lot of people doing deads, squatts, and heavy rack pulls. Screw em, they will always be small.

Those lifts are very good for building overall body mass, and building bruit strength. Not the best for building as "stage body". That is the reason they are not used that much anymore, plus, when you are juicing, your muscles will allow you to lift a lot more weight than your body can support. So you stand a huge risk of hurting yourself doing those lifts. ------------------ Work With Your Back And With Your Brain

If you are talking about a clean and press (as opposed to clean and jerk), then the reason no one does it is because it injures your lower back since most people lean too far back when pressing the weight. That is why it is not done in the Olympics anymore. Too many athletes injured themselves. ------------------ http://2thick.elitefitness.com

I didn't know that about lower back injuries, 2Thick, but I'm not surprised. I've been working out for 4 years at the same gym (a university "fitness center" but one with a pretty good weight room, you all would like it) and have seen only ONE guy EVER do the clean and press. And he was not one of the big boys, but a grad student from Finland who was a master's swimmer. Swimming, not lifting, was his thing. Funny that you call cleans and press a lost "art." It struck me, watching him, that this Finnish guy was a real technique perfectionist. Maybe it's that these lifts take terrific technique, and that's why they're not widely done. I've only known one guy, also, who does power cleans. He, too, seems to really have his technique down cold! Both of these lifts, though, look totally fuckin' dangerous to me, so I've never done them and don't aim to try. I liked Helmsman's point about the other lifts (squats, deads) that are mostly missing in the gym. Guys are all "bench press junkies," but nobody does the fundamentals. Thinking about it, it might be impatience and lack of willingness to learn technique that accounts for that. God knows I've been squatting seriously for a couple of years, I mean really STUDYing squats, reading about 'em, trying 'em every which way, really concentrating on them, and I still don't do them properly to my satisfaction. Same way with deads, though they're a little easier to master. I don't know ... You think we should risk fucking ourselves up with cleans and shit like that? I dunno, man ... Fuck your back up, and you lose a lot of training time, you know! Bjaarki ------------------ BECOME SOMEONE'S HERO! |
