I used to mix about a half dozen raw eggs in my protein shake a few years ago, then one day I got sick as hell, I assume from salmonella. Now it's hard boiled or egg beaters, no raw ones.

In the morning, I put one or two raw eggs in a blender with milk, whey protien, and a bananna...and I love the shit.

Hey Ripped you may want to do a quick search on this one...I remember about a week ago this topic came up and someone made a reference to bio-availablity of the protien in raw eggs as opposed to that of cooked eggs.I dont remember the exact comparison, but to say the least the cooks eggs were substantially more advantageous to eat...just one more thing to think about besides the risks of salmonella. PS any farm boys out there who can confirm or deny this...I once heard that by the time an egg reaches the store shelves it is already weeks old.

I used to put them in my protien shakes back in high school. I got sick once and haven't done it again since. [This message has been edited by E M T (edited August 30, 2000).]

Raw eggs= trouble | ||

I used to drink 12 whole raw eggs in two cups of oj every morning for years, never got sick once. Knock on wood. I think you can do it as well with like egg beaters, which would be safe from salmonella (sp) ------------------

Yes, eggs from most grocery stores are several weeks old. Has to do with giant food conglomerates and central shipping/processing. Now many grocery stores have their eggs delivered to central warehouse and they ship out to their stores. This does not affect whether or not they have salmonella. They are infected by chickens eating the droppings of rats and passing it into the yolk of the egg they lay. It then infects the whole egg. I still eat raw eggs though. Anyone know where the study/info on bioavailability of protein in raw vs cooked eggs is?

I've done it with egg beaters, and never got sick and there also is a product called "Just Whites", that seems to be pretty safe.. in fact they have a 95% guarantee on the box (5% chance of vomiting all night)..and it could be 95% of 2 people for all we know. Be careful.

Jeezus, Ontario! You say all that about rat shit, and you still eat 'em? FUUUuuuuccckkkk.

Is there any advantage to eating raw eggs as opposed to cooking them... other than the time factor?

I heard this summer they were coming out with pasteurized eggs. They were going to be more expensive, but you could eat them runny or even raw if you want. haven't seen them yet. ------------------

hmmm i never just use egg whites it tastes like asssssss i need flavor.. plus there is alotta BCAA in the egg yolk! ------------------

Yea, there is something in raw egg WHITES (other than salmonella) that encourages bad bacteria in the intestines.

I have my own chickens for eggs, so I know what conditions they live in and I don't need to worry about salmonella. My favorite is two whole eggs, eight egg whites, 1 cup skim milk, 1 tablespoon of honey, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla...blend it and you have eggnog. 46g of protein, 31 g of carb, 10g of fat and it tastes good!

I've heard reports that say Europe doesn't have salmonella like we do over here. I still wouldn't eat raw eggs even in Europe. Raw eggs taste like crap with grits. Or so I've been told.... ------------------

Do you really want to get sick with salmonella? It`s quit dangerous. My friend lost about 15kg becouse of salmonella

The FDA has established guidelines for the handling of eggs. They must be refrigerated at all times. Studies have found that the bacteria, salmonella, grows and multiplies at room temperature. All these guidelines have been given to grocery stores. Unfortuneatly, it is one of those laws that can't be enforced. In supermarkets, you see eggs sitting in the middle of an aisle far away from any refigeration. So the best way to eat eggs is to cook them all the way through. I don't even eat them with runny yolks anymore. The risk of getting sick is too great. Eat safe.

I eat them raw all the time and I NEVER got sick ! I don't know why I would... I live in Canada..eggs are always refrigerated in groceries.. That could be an answer

I only eat them raw when I'm training for my fight with Apollo. Other than that I just have Adrian scramble them for me. ------------------

Lisa_the_strong, I live 100 miles northwest of Ottawa. You guys think eggs are bad. You know how some grocery stores get there big family packs. When various chicken parts are getting close to or slightly past their date...they take them in the back, rinse them with water and bleach (kills the smell and the bacteria) and then package them in those big family packs and sell them cheap.

yes you are right | ||

raw eggs are 100% and dont have salmonella...the egg is sterile,,,the salmonella is on the shell,,so you need to wash the shell good before you break it..and if your immune system is up to par you wont get sick anyway in peru I eat raw eggs everyday...3 everymorning with a banana and oj..just wash the egg this is like all you people who throw away the yolk thinking fat and cholesterol...but it is not the egg..its how you cook it!!

Salmonella enteritidis (SE) does exist inside the egg. The old belief is it was only on the shell...however they started doing testing and found that it was also in the yolk in a small number of eggs. They believe it comes from chickens eating the droppings of rodents. In Canada, about 1 in a 1,000,000 eggs has salmonella (Grade A). In the US, it's 1 in 20,000.

I guess this means I will have to stop eating the shells then. ------------------

I'll confirm the fact the cook eggs ARE more bioavailable than raw eggs.

the guy who said that he put his in oj may be on to something. OJ is very acidic and since bacteria can't survive in that kind of environment it may be strong enough to nuke the majority of Salomenalla bacteria- thus you do not get sick ------------------
Amateur Bodybuilder Posts: 61 |
Don't you think your stomach would be more acidic than a glass of OJ though? I wouldn't risk salmonella over a few more grams of protien myself. Plus its kinda fucking disgusting.

I think its seriously risky to eat raw eggs. Egg Beaters are pasteurized; just drink them. If you've ever had food poisoning, its not fun. Forget about dying, its that you won't be able to eat propery for a while and will lose the weight you so desperately trying to keep. Not worth the risk to me.

Raw eggs are good for you. The protein in the egg white is what you need. There is no protein in the yolk. Also, the salmanilla developes in the egg yolk. Also, when eggs get cooked the protein decreases and gets synthesized to something or other. I usually do 3-4 egg whites with a protein shake or, I take some sort of berry, like strawberry, or cherry or blueberry and blend it up in it. It is good and I haven't been to the hospital for anything related to taking them raw. Also, one good check to see if your eggs are still good before you crack them goes as follows: 1. Fill up a pan with cold water. This came from good old Emeril Lagasse from the food channel as well as a nutritionist I spoke too. ------------------ "Pain is weakness leaving the body>>>" |
