after deadlifting, what other back exercise should i concentrate on? stuff for upper back (i.e. chins) or lower lats (i.e. rows)? besides lower back, obviously, what part of the back do deads hit?

After Deads I would say pull ups (all different positions) just look at gymnasts. Then rows. Deads hit your whole back; upper, lower, deep within the muscle. ------------------ UP-TO-DATE information on STEROIDS and PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS: [This message has been edited by 300 kleen (edited August 29, 2000).]

For overall back thickness, another awesome excercise is bent-over barbell rows(Heavy).

Chins are great, done through a full range of motion. Also bent over rows, T-bar rows, and dummbbell rows are all good for thickness. although very few people do them hang cleans and power cleans are great for upper back and trap development. I have'nt done them since the football days, but they are awesome.

chinups after deads. Those Two exercises improved my back immensely over the last year. Deadlifts hit your whole back, among many other bodyparts. Some succeed because they are destined to, most succeed because they are determined to

You should be coherent to the amount of weight you are using.Heavy weights are axiomatic to building DENSITY to your muscles.Strength and size have a direct correlation.Do chins w/ weights around your waist and heavy dumbbell rows,if you are fortunate to have DBs at least 150 lbs. They will save your lower back from the stress that barbell rowing causes ------------------

I do deads on leg day. I don't really consider deads a "back exercise," at least I don't group deads with pullups, rows, and other "upper back" lifts. So, I would do squats and other leg / lower back lifts along with deads. A guy on another thread (think his handle was Final Chapter) posted about finishing a set of deads with some shrugs, then holding the bar static for 10 seconds plus before putting it down. I thought that was useful, and will give it a try next week, since I do traps along with legs, and that'll fit perfectly. Good question, though. Take it easy, bro! yes, of course i try to go as heavy as i possibly can, but i have no interest in powerlifting. i always do at least 4 reps. i asked this question because lately i have been doing some very heavy deadlifting, i then do a few sets of heavy shrugs. by then i am pretty fried and i don't have much left to get the intensity that i want in the rest of my exercises, so i was wondering what i should do next. big hurt - what do you do first? chins or rows?

bjaarki - i do stiff-legged deads on leg day and normal deads on back day. why don't you consider them a back exercise? they fry my back.

I like to DEADLIFT first to get it out of the way 5 sets of 6! Then I like to do chins then Db. rows last. But you get stale after doing the same thing over and over. It's like bangin' the same piece of ass, you get bored.Always deadlift, but maybe substitute the chins for seated rows ONCE in awhile ------------------

I always do Dumbell Rows after deadlifts. Bent-over Rows may be a better mass-builder, but after deads my lower back is too shot to bend over for the exercise.

Decibel: I don't classify deads in the same group as the lifts I do on "back day," probably because I keep deads light (no more than 315#) and I use a "sumo" type lift (lots of leg involvement) because of my bad lower back. Somehow, deads just don't seem to fit with "back day," when I'm doing pullups, pulldowns, bent over rows, etc.. "Back day" lifts seem to focus on the lats and, to quite an extent, the biceps (as an assisting group). I don't get anything going in my lats or bis from deads, maybe because I use a sumo rather than stiffleg stance, or because the bar's too light. I have to keep it that way, though. I do deads with squats, and I fuck my back up pretty royally. Remember, I'm an old guy (49 and counting). I'm still in a lot of pain from yesterday. Bjaarki
