We do it for chicks, respect, admiration, but most importantly we do it for ourselves, and possibly for our families since it can lengthen ones lifespan. I just got a 97 Grand Am GT, I've been waiting for a "cool car" forever. So my dad says to me, "Well layed, it looks like you've got a chick magnet to go with your guns, I don't expect to see you home as often." My dad has tried to stop me from lifting because he believes the weight I have put on from it is detrimental to my health, I'm not fat, but my dad is from the old school of thinking that weight lifting will make you musclebound, and any additional weight that you put on with weight lifting will bring the same health problems as obesity. So I smiled and said thanks, I think my dad's starting to like my being strong, probably because I carry heavy shit for him when he needs it.

Good Stuff. I think bodybuilding fills a void of something we all miss. What it is, I don't know. ------------------

pharmer, that would kick ass, but I look back, all the arguments over the time I spend at the gym, all the health lectures. Even though it was all bullshit, I'm proud of how I've moved on despite it all, and still maintained a good relationship with my dad. Afterall, he paid for half the car which will undoubtedly see many an hour in the Flex Gym parking lot. ------------------

My pops and I are always in competition to see whose is bigger and looks better. Obviously, my dad is no match for me: 21 years old, 6' 3", 200lbs, under 10% bodyfat, but he is probably one of the most fit men for his age 59. He runs 5 miles and lifts hard every chance he gets, plus works two jobs to put me and my sister thru college. He is an inspiration to me, and most other young bodybuilders at my gym. By the way, I just got an Acura 3.2 CL type S to match my guns. ------------------

My father doesn't like me going to the gym either, and he especially dislikes the supplements. I get so much slack from my mother too. One thing is for certain, they call on me to their moving; bloody hypocrites. One day I hope I will get a compliment from the old man.

my pops brought me to the lifting and cardio part...but i had to bring the diet and supplementation to him. it took me and my brother 3 years to convinve him that weight gainers are not steroids...LOL ------------------

oh i hear that, my dad heard that mark mcquire took creatine as well as andro, next thing i know dad's tellin me that creatine is steroids. He still isn't convinced there's a difference, maybe if he ever walks in when I have a needle in my ass he'll think maybe the creatine wasn't so bad afterall. ps, I think we all know that mcquire taking something that works a hell of a lot better than creatine and androstene ------------------

Glad to hear that you all have a good relationship with your folks, and are still living with them. My parents bought me samsonite for my eighteenth birthday. lol. I do it just for me. At my age you realize that the only one you have to impress is yourself. Not to mention go to bed with too. I build my body becuase it is mine and I want to have control over it and not the other way around. I get compliments but they just aren't that important anymore. I don't really know why. But when I look in the mirror after a good workout, I have a sense of having really done something positive. I don't classify as a body builder yet, just someone who is into bodybuilding. I am not huge but I aspire too be. That is my goal my hobby, what I train so hard for and force myself too eat so many meals a day for. It is why I keep out of the bar and out of the dating seen during my cycles. Because I got one life and only so much time to live it and certain things that I want to accomplish before it ends. That's why I do it. Peace.

I had been interested in bodybuilding competition for a long time but just never could get with the right person to put everything together. My father's death was the thing that motivated me to go for my goal. He was a great guy and we had a good relationship. He didn't drink, smoke or anything like that but he loved to eat and he ate poorly. He also was very sedentary and had few "strenuous" hobbies. He had a heart attack within 1 year of his retirement. I decided I didn't want to follow those footsteps and that I needed to get off my ass and go after my bodybuilding goals. That was 9 years and 12 competetions ago. I have kept going and never looked back.....enjoyed every minute of it. Best wishes!

BBman, yes I do still live with my parents, I'm not sure if it's common knowledge or not but I'm only 18 years old. To avoid getting age lectures, I'd encourage all of you to reflect on the quality of most of my posts. I know my shit, I trained my ass off for all four years of high school. I mastered supplementation right away, after two years I got the diet thing down, and I've spent the last two years learning how to up the intensity big time. I've been told by the gym owner, who I've become pretty good friends with, that I should compete if it interests me. I started going to the local annual bodybuilding show(the largest in Illinois) two years ago and have been fascinated ever since. I'm honestly not sure if I've reached my natural peek, and assuming that one would know if they had I figure I probably haven't. However I've gained 50lbs naturally and figure that I shouln't be far from my peek. I also feel that my decision to embark on my first cycle soon is an informed and intelligently thought out decision. And my motive for taking this measure at a young age; to take the teen devision with a bang, hell yeah, I'm going in to win, plain and simple. I hope my experiance and knowledge of AS will deter you guys from not respecting my decision. ------------------

This is wierd. My dad has always tried to stay in good shape and has had countless memberships at gyms and bought extensive home machines and free weights. He does encourage me to use them, but when he sees my gains and when I tell him I have only begun to achieve my goals he thinks that is going too far. He doesn't want me to be freaky. But I do. ghans

Well, I was fat 'til my senior year of high school (lineman in football), started running like 10 miles a day and went vegetarian, then went to an NPC show and met Jay Cutler...standing face to face with him, right after he guest posed, in my amatiated state from lack of meat/protein, I knew what I was going to do! Now, 2 years and 3 shows later, I'm about to start my first cycle...damn, I'm all tingly just thinkin' about it! ------------------

My dad was a power lifter when he was young. He had a bad back injury that ends his career. He was concern that same shit could happen to me. Thankfully, never did and I hope it never will.

CAn't get layed. No one is dissing you bro. I think it is great what you have accomplished so far! I live with my step-dad. Not because I need too but because of a promise I made too my mother, before she went HOME. She made me promise that I would not let him wind up in a nursing home. Since he was twenty years her senior, when she died he was already 70 and she only 52. He is hearing impaired and now has renal failure. I would love to be out on my own and have my own place, but a promise is a promise and family is the only conncection that you have in a world full of strangers. Friends will leave you but family is stuck with you. So if you can't rely on family, or family rely on you, then what is the point? Thanx to the other guy for the compliment, I just can't remember your nick. Some of your alls posts are great! Can't, I really liked yours. Inspiration comes from many sources and all of it is great. peace bros.

Dieselnj: Your dad sounds like a cool guy! So does yours, Ranger. I'm 10 years and more these guys junior, and I take my hat off to them. Most guys their age think a good workout is a round of golf. Tell them they're admired by at least one "old guy" on the board. Bjaarki

Its great to hear all these posts guys. I think we all do it to fill a void inside of us, whether we think so or not. Today while at class this morning here at college I began to think about bodybuilding and why I do it. I do it for the obvious reasons that most everyone else states, chicks, bettering your body and mind, hobby and love for the sport, and definetely the complements you recieve. But how many here feel there is a deeper reason you do it, but dont really ever recognize it? I know I feel at peace in the gym, like it is one of the most comfortable places I can be. Well as for my parents they dont exactly like the way I've become with bodybuilding. My diet, the time I spend in the gym, supplements, and the dedication and emphasis that I've put on what I do, they reject it the more involved I become. I do hope that one day they will finally support me more with it.

you know, the weird thing about having lifted for so long, is I don't remember what it was like to not lift. I don't understand how my friends keep from going crazy without going to the gym, if I didn't go, I'd feel like I wasn't taking care of myself. ------------------
