Does anyone have first hand knowledge on this? I am 53 & I'm going on a cycle from Dr. Skruggs, my question is will I be able to utilize the calories at my age or should I curb some cals? I would appreciate any help. IRON MOVER

Your metabolism will be slower then most bodybuilders so you maay want to consider less calories from carbs and fat then the amount that is suggested in the weight gain diets.

At the same time you shouldn't restrict so many calories that your holding yourself back from gains. The only way that you will know for sure is to experiement a little will the calorie intake.

A good rule of thumb is if you are getting fat than increase the protien intake and reduce the carbs and fat by small increments until you are metabolising all of the calories that you want. If you are too lean the increase at small increments until you have reached your ideal intake.

Of course this will not be so simple when you start to gain muscle and your metabolism increase in speed. Consistent training and eating will increase your metabolic rate and extra muscle will consume more calories so you will have to adjust the intake as you progress.

Good luck.

This was a general question. Since my metabolic rate has decreased (wih age) should I follow a reduced calorie diet relative to my metabolic rate? The diet will have:4500 to 5000 cals. Stats age:53 hgt.:5"11' wgt.:220lbs. bf%16% guess? My goal is to gain some size & srreanth back. IRON MOVER

What are you gonna be taking...with that high a bodyfat, you're probably gonna want to start with lower calories, then up them until you start seeing the fat accumulate...read all the posts about taking T3 while bulking, too, they seem to have promise in keeping bodyfat in check when adding lots of mass...I'm an ex-fat-kid, so I ALWAYS TRY TO KEEP MY SIX PACK, even when I'm bulking!!

You can throw your current metabolic rate out the window. Everything will change in about 4-5 weeks. Keep your current caloric intake the same but eat better and add protein shakes to your daily diet. Your body will call for more when it needs it. Listen to your body.

Iron Mover:

Are you just starting to train seriously, or have you been training for awhile, and are just now doing a cycle to get over a plateau? Hard to tell from your post. If you're a newbie to weights, I wouldn't worry much about cals. Your metabolism will get a big boost from both the lifting and the gear, and if your belt gets too tight you can always cut back later.

Another factor here is your current level of BF. If you're 5'11" and 220 with 16 percent BF, you're already in pretty damn good shape for an old guy (I can call you that, I'm pushing 50 myself). You're guessing at the BF precentage, though, so I suspect you're probably somewhat higher than that. Upshot here is that with a higher percent BF, your body is probably already pretty used to processing lipids and isn't super-efficient at storing Kcals (it doesn't have to be, since you nourish it pretty well), so, again, I wouldn't be too concerned with putting on extra weight.

Have you ever cut up before? If not, you might want to cut up some before you begin your cycle. Get yourself into a kind of "bodyweight deficit" position. ECA, clen, and other things will help here. This may not help you physiologically, but it will help you mentally while you're on your cycle and bulking up; it will give you a sense of subjective freedom to eat (after all, you're just making up for "lost time," as it were). At your age and in your condition, I'd be more concerned about getting the full anabolic advantage of your gear, than I would about gaining a little flab, which, with practice, can be easily shed, especially if you lift regularly.

BTW, glad to see another old timer on the board, as well as a fellow "Joyzeyan."

Hey, iron mover, thats the greatest thing about using gear when you are older. Remember how your body comp started changing around 40? Everything turns to lard around the middle. On gear, you will reverse this effect of aging over time, by returning the metabolism to that of a younger man. When I took up the life again, I was astonished at the change I went through. Dropped 3 pant sizes, but weighed more and looked lean again. Now I eat whatever I want. Why they would keep this shit from us is beyond me. Its the fountain of youth brother.

Iron Mover:

Not busting your chops, bro, but you should be able to figure out your BF percentage given the data you now have.

If your weight (198) and BF (13.5%) two months ago were valid figures, the math is as follows:

Lean mass two months ago: 171.27 pounds.
Lean mass gained past two months: Maybe none, maybe two pounds, but let's say one pound.

Weight now: 220 pounds.
Lean mass now: 172.27 pounds.

BF% now: 21.7%, give or take.

Told you it was probably higher than your guess of 16%. Hey, all the more reason to hit the gym, though 21.7% is still a lot lower than most guys your age. Really, bro. My hat's off to you.
