I heard it's bullshit. On mine you have to enter your height, what the hell do that have to do with bodyfat?

I have one of these Tanita BF scales and I've yet to figure out if it's reliable in any way. I was bloated with tons of water after two weeks of d-bol, and the scale showed a HUGE drop in body fat. I took a diuretic and lost the water and according to the scale my BF went back to about normal. So presumably the scale sees water as lean body mass.

Those scales are no good. I got one and it was consistently telling me 20% bf. I told it to my friends at the gym, and they all said no way. So I went to my chiropractor, and he did a real test...12%!!!The Tanita was almost double that. The problem with the Tanita is that the sensors are only on your feet, so they go up one leg, into your midsection, and back down the other leg (and my midsection is about the only place I want to lose fat). The one at the Chiropractors has sensors on your hands and feet, so it goes through your entire body. Gives you a nice detailed printout too.

Actually they do have useful purpose, they may not be the most accurate at measuring your BF% to start but they are pretty good at measuring changes up or down. To the guy who had his scale show a lowering when he was bloated, your scale might be bad, I'd take it back and get another. Mine shows a BF% increase when I'm holding water, just as it should, and I have 2 other friends who have the scale and theirs does the same. It shouldn't make a difference but I have the scale that measures for athletes.

Tanita scales SUCK ASS!!!! The biggest waste of money in my book! Your BF goes up and down 6% in a day. Seems like a jip!! I have one for sale if anyone is intrested. Later, Green

I GOT MINE FREE. But I now know it's bullshit. A friend steped on mine. He's 5'7 and weights 190lbs. it's said he was 23%BF. No way this dude is lean and I'm sure he's under 8. My weight goes from 195-200 and my BF from 12-16. There's no way it could move up and down like that in just a few days (the BF) I just rely on it for the weight, nothing ELSE!

Bros: The best BF assessment uses (1) sensitive calipers, (2) used by a professional trainer (3) measuring skin thickness at a minimum of three sites (thigh, waist, pec), (4) repeated for a total of three times, (5) then averaged across the three trials. This is far more accurate than an impedence (Tanita) scale, or even the underwater method, which is unreliable on athletes with both very high and very low BF percentages. Find a trainer who you feel is good with calipers, and have that same person use the method I've just described. Track your progress quarterly (more often than that really isn't necessary), and you'll be pleased. Bjaarki ------------------ BECOME SOMEONE'S HERO!

You guys if you want an accurate one you have to get the professional ones. My dad's cosmetic surgery practice has a BF-350e and he hooks it up to the cpu and does a complete body comp. analisys. You can get it from the henry schein medical catalog. It calculates your total water, fat mass and fat free mass. http://www.tanita.com/pro_html_file/pro_350e.html |
