Thanks guys.......Oh BTW (I hope I don't get the moderators mad),we had to move the website, if you want the URL you can e-mail me for it.

Thanks.

Yes you can easily pick up viruses and trojans and many other things without opening attatchments, just being attatched to the net without a firewall or some security program running leaves you very very open to attacks.

just being on the net can set you up to hackers, let alone programs like Scour or Napster were your directly linked to others.

Scour yes, Napster would be tough. E2 answered your question right on the money. All you have to do is go on the internet with a fixed IP address (cable,DSL,T1 etc.) without a firewall and you're hacker meat.

Napster is a basic IRC chat windows with a graphical file transfe interface built in. Napster uses standard 6000-6999 port to go thru. Any machine, dial-up or direct (cable, DSL, T1) can have access gained to it. Every machine has ports which allows certian connection to come thru. I.E. 21=ftp, 23=telnet, 80=http, and so on. All they need to do is get your ip address. and then run a port scanner to see which port are open. Then the can access your computer and run certian programs and or files. Now granted this is not the most common thing because Microsoft has added security to web browsers and operating systems so that this type of attack is harder to do. Also if you do not have file or print sharing enabled then this is almost useless. The new back door is in outlook. The hacker can add various line to the subject line which will create a buffer oveflow in the program. I won't go into details about this but if this happens they can access your machine with any problems. How...once the buffer overflow happens. Outlook will then run/excute any program that was attached to the e-mail. It does not have to be an attachment. Binary code will work the same here, in the filed of the e-mail. How do I know this. Being Network admin for The state of Kentucky you get these little updates from various groups to help protect the network. I hope this help and didn't confuse people.

aahepp, Glad you said "almost useless".. disabling print and file sharing will not make your computer hack proof. I would hope that's not how you protect your network.

For anyone who wants a quick security check of their computer try https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

ulter, nope we do it diffretn. Our routers have nice firewall securtiy built into them and so does our out going proxy. We can monitor every port and see the amount of traffic that comes thru. When over usage of certian ports we get notified. Nice feature to have but expensive.

Hey ulter i tried that site on my comp, here's the nice little report it gave me

Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!
One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.
Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.

Heh heh, nice to know.

E2

JK... Even if you think your safe from attack and although some programs or equiptment will tell you that you are... Don't be fooled. That's all I can say about that, but trust me on this one.

Peace

Yes rock man i know we're never really safe. Ulter, all my ports are stealthed, they didn't find any of them, well at least my comp won't respond to them. Well maybe not all my ports but the main ones are.

E2, Cudos to whoever put together your firewall and/or computer configuration. Stealth is the only safe way to be on-line.

If you guys had 139 open then it must have said Greetings _______ with your computer name in the blank. That's pretty scary the first time. Yoda, Zone alarm is what I use on all of my computers it's great and the price is right. I only use Black Ice Defender on the my server.

Note: Anyone running win 2000.. if you put the service pack 1 on your computer it may disable your Zone Alarm or Black Ice permanantly. For that reason alone I would recommend against the service pack.

you guys should also think about going through a proxy server. there are several ways into your computer such as back key loggers and so such.

Lockdown is a good program. I used it before I found Zone Alarm.. but Zone Alarm is easier to use and is free. OK, I used the Lockdown with a crack so it was also free.
Lockdown will block your ports but it doesn't run stealth as well as Zone Alarm. The reason you want stealth is that no one knows your there. They can't hack what they can't see.
