WSM Qualifiers: Day 3
Points through the third day of the qualifying rounds at WSM are as follows.

Heat 1:
Dixon, 23
Boyer, 22-1/2
Girard, 22
Baskin, 18

Heat 2:
Vagadal, 19
M. Samuelsson, 18
Ross, 16
Olafsson, 12

Heat 3:
Virtanen, 27
Badenhorst, 22-1/2
Kerschbaumer, 16
T. Samuelsson, 15
Schoonveld, 14-1/2

Heat 4:
Muhr, 21
Karlsen, 20
Philippi, 18
Veoga, 11

Heat 5:
Pudzieanowska, 26
Savickas, 24
Pfister, 21
Baltus, 18-1/2

I hate to say it but (my favourite American competitor) Mark Philippi was forced to retire, due to a leg injury. I was also extremely surprised to see Magnus Samuelson
drop down a place in his heat, Samuelson has been in great form and has won more competitions then anyone this year so far.
Also it was a shock to see Sven Karlson drop down a place as well. I was very happy to see Gerrit Badenhorst move up into second ,he is beleived by most people to be the strongest man never to have won a Worlds Strongest Man competition and is a huge sentimental favourite this year in his home country of South Africa.

I have some more specific info on some of today heats, Virtanen won Power Stairs in his heat yesterday with Badenhorst 2nd. Virtanen is the only competitor so far to have won all the events in his heat. Samuelsson was last in his heat yesterday which was a big shock to everyone. The remaining events in Virtanen's heat are
Conan's Wheel
Log Press (today)
Carry & Drag Sunday.

Virtanen commments everything is going extremely well, even his legs aren't hurting nearly as much as last year after a couple of days. In Africa stone carry (Husafelt
type..) he was even able to play a little.

It would seem now that Virtanen is the favorite to win this year.
By tonight I should know most of the 10 finalists already.

This came from Whit's brother Brady Baskin.

OH!!!! and guess what "rumor" i heard from "someone"????
in conans wheel Whit was in 1st place, then Dixon goes after him and doesnt beat whit(not sure what place it was though). He drops apparatus and after it hit ground it breaks.
(In rules it stated if implement broke on a competitor, competitor could RE-DO event once fixed)
So...even though it broke AFTER he finished(the distance was markable, and like i said, was not the winning distace), they let him re do the event and he wound up
beating whit and getting 1st place. What a joke!!!
current points in that heat:
Dixon-23
boyer-22.5
Hugo-22
Whit 18
If hugo, whit, and boyer wouldnt have got SCREWED.. points would be
dixon-22 or lower
boyer-22.5 or higher
Hugo 22 or higher
whit 19
so this definetly affects whit & Hugos odds of making the finals.
one good thing, if hugo, whit, or pfister dont make finals, (sorry...i know, i should be thinking OPTIMISTICALLY) they stand a good chance of being alternates
becuase i believe they are the top 3 highest in points next to the top 2 currently in each heat. but you never know what could happen in the next 3-6 hours??????
good luck to all, and sorry to hear about mark, he was doing great and i think wouldve made it to the finals
ps-we'll see if whits training with my nice & swmooth, big round heavy balls pays off tommorow in the stones !!

Jouko Ahola had movie commitments that prevented him from compteteing this year.
Dirk Schoonveld looks very average , which was a surprise coming off his big win at the American Qualifying event a few weeks ago.
He did have a very tough heat though with both Virtanen and Badenhorst.
