Lately I have been having some pain in my left shoulder while benching...It doens't
bother me till I get to around 275lbs. I am 5'8 now and weigh 200. I have done 400lbs
in the past (about 5 years ago weighed 185 then) but just got back into serious lifting
in April.. Well 2 weeks ago I did 3 sets of heavy benching, for me (300x6, 300x5,
300x3) and afterwords both my shoulders where achy. Since then my left shoulder
hurts now when I bring the bar down to about 5 inches off my chest. Not a stabbing
pain but enough to cause me to back off. My next workout after the 300 episode I
didn't go over 225 (I did it 15 times first set but could of done 5 more) Today I did my
warm ups and went to 275 and only did 4 when my shoulder told me to stop. This is
the only exercise that is hurting my shoulder...I do standing barbell presses with no
problem and also side laterals. I hope that this is not a sign of a rotator cuff problem.
Anyone have any thoughts on what the problem is?? Overtraining?? I have been doing
chest shoulsers and tri's 2 times a week the last 2 months (I put on 15lbs) but I usually
do each body part once a week. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

I have similar pain, mine caused by bursitis that is taking forever to heal. Stretch, stretch in the morning, before you work out, after you workout, stretch all day. It seems to be helping.

YOUR LAST COUPLE OF SENTENCES TELL THE STORY SOMEWHAT.I WOULD BACK OFF THE CHEST/SHOULDER ROUTINE TO ONCE A WEEK FOR A WHILE AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.IF YOU CANT BRING YOURSELF TO DO THAT,YOU COULD ALWAYS EXPERIMENT WITH A LITTLE DECA.I HAVE HORRIBLE JOINTS THAT DECA SEEMED TO ALLEVIATE.I TRAINED PAIN FREE WHILE ON.JUST A SUGGESTION.

I've got that problem too. I had a pain right on top of my left shoulder. It felt like a nail was trying to get in. I can't do flat benchpress. I find my elbows are too much involved while I'm that position.

What I did is is switched to incline bench. I'm alright on decline, it doesn't hurt. I did also high reps(15-20 reps). I had to stop lifting heavy for about two months to give my shoulder a break. Now my shoulder is in perfect condition and I can lift heavy again but I don't ever do flat bench anymore.

I agree, you're probably overtraining by doing chest, shoulders, and tris twice a week. If you feel you *must* do chest twice a week, at least skip the shoulders on the second day. Most chest exercises also work the shoulders, so you're effectively working your shoulders almost twice as much as you are the chest, at least as far as stress on the shoulder joint goes.

Two years ago I was benching 420 and lovin life. My right shoulder started to hurt but I just kept going, eventually I couldn't even pick up my little girl.

Back way off, start doing some rehab type movements with dumbells. When you work chest use dumbells for awhile, no explosive movements, slow and controled.

I know it sucks but if you don't do it now you'll be paying for it later, like me!!!

I agree with the post's that tell you to back off,if you don't let it heal it will never go away and get worse.Been there and done that.

Go by the rice principle. You need to warmup more than you think.

I am assuming you are doing straight bar? Use dumbells and try a more neutral grip at the bottom....I have the same problem with my shoulders.

I'm in the same boat. I have been doing all flye movements for chest (which, ironically is making my chest grow like a weed) and being extra careful on any back movements. I am also stretching a lot and doing one or two sets of EXTREMELY LIGHT lateral raises before any upper body workout. Also doing extremely light vertical machine presses (not heavy enough to even get a pump) just to utilize the rotator cuff muscles in order to help it heal. This seems to be helping.

Wow..thanks for all the responses..I really didn't know there were a lot of other people having the same type of problem. My shoulder also hurts a bit while doing flyes (50-60 lbs) I guess I will lay off the flat bench and work on incline DB presses (no pain there)and cut back to every body part once a week. Also I will stretch, stretch and stretch and make sure I really warm up the shoulders before I do any pressing type of movement....Thanks bro's....

Mine does the same thing. I always do a good stretch of my shoulder muscles before a workout and between sets. This seems to take care of it for the most part. And yes, shoulder problems are pretty common. Peace...Mav

I have the same problem and after X-rays and a MRI it was discovered that my bicep tendon was extremely inflamed where it attatches in my shoulder. I experience similar pain you describe while doing the same exercises. I took 3 months off and went to physical therapy (insurance paid for it and was well worth it) and will return to lifting soon. Did you notice any cracking or popping in the joint??

Hey BigMike... both of my shoulders sound like popcorn when I rotate them. Only the right hurts. I never considered it to be the bicep tendon.. hmmmm might have to go see a sports doc

You know...you guys really got me thinking here about the bicep tendon. I have noticed a little bit of pain (not pain but kind of like a strain) while doing hammer curls in my left elbow (on the outside part) that travels a little ways up my bicep. If it is a bicep tendon what exercises should I avoid?? I would hate to quit training all together... Thanks bro's..

You guy's are describing my problem exactly. I asked my doctor about the popping noises and he said it was the bursitis. He has been treating me for tendonitis and I believe my main problem is the burstitis. I have received my second cortizone shot last monday. That will be the last. I should be going to rehab I can't seem to get an appointment. I haven't had a good workout since April. I am quite optimistic since the shot. I have been stretching non-stop, and I take an Advil before I go to the gym.

If you go to mothernature.com and do a search on bursitis and tendonitis you may find some interesting remedies.
