![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I like to use both. The db will challenge your stabilizers more and once the stabilizers are exhausted the prime movers will not be able to be worked hard enough. This were barbells shine, and ocassionaly machines can be used. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I like DB presses but, unfortunately I have had to relegate them to a "lighter" finishing exercise. I've got a brutal case of tendonitis where the anterior head of the biceps tendon inserts into the shoulder. If I try to use DB presses intensely I pay for it for bigtime! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have always used dumbells to finish off a body part. I don't believe you can put the same amount stress on, say your chest, with dumbells. For example, you throw 315 on the flat bench and load up the muscle. You can't go that heavy on dumbells (unless you are truly a monster) and elict the same growth response as doing heavy bench. I see guys using heavy dumbells and their form is bad, their rang of motion is poor and they can't control the weight. The other day I watched a guy doing incline dumbell press with 80's. He would do four and one forced, then throw the weight from his shoulders to the floor. On his thrid set the head on the dumbell snaped off and he jump's up and says "fuckin cheap weights" I wanted to snap his head, I needed that weight. I understand it's not good if you are goin heavy to ease the dumbell down, you may hurt your shoulder. But if you just got to let them go and drop to the floor, your going to heavy. It means you can't handle the weight. It would be like someone with a 225 bench loading up 315 and "GOING FOR IT." IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() l would say Dumbells, but only because you can lower them more. The barbell ends once your chest is touched, unless in your gym you have those special bars with an angle, so you can lower the bar more. ------------------ Don't look back, life is too short IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() I like both. The bench really seems to increase my power and size...especially in my front delts. The dumbells are great to finish off the muscle because you have a greater range of motion and you can really squeeze the muscle. ------------------ IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() actully dumbells are heavier for your muscles....your right you can load up the weight more than dumbells, but that doesnt mean is heavier..say you can jpress 200 10x on the barbell flat....take 100 lbs dumbells in both hands, you wouldnt' even handle, 5 reps, so barbell, is more weight, but dumbell are heavier for your muscles.. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'll echo codex's reply. I prefer the bb bench and the incline db. Or the hammer strength incline press. It's hard to handle enough weight on the db's for the bench press. The last few years I've been concentrating on powerlifting so there's no question that the bb bench is my major big lift for chest. It's nice to follow it up with db flat bench sometimes though. Good depth for added power out of the bottom. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() I like both but for different reasons. I have dislocated my right shoulder and it still causes me some trouble, and I am getting older (38). I like dumbells some of the time because my shoulders can go through a freer range of motion. My right arm takes a lower and straighter path and my left arm goes wider and higher. I have to do about 6 warm up sets before flat BB benches or else my shoulder will be so stiff later I can hardly move it. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I do both, I used to do one or the other and since I have started doing both my incline dumbells have shot up over the last 6 months, my max for the longest time was around 105's now I can easily get 4 or 5 with 120's, I am gong to try 125's next chest day. ------------------ IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I sometimes mix them up, but generally use them both at different times of the year. For fall and winter I mainly use the straight bar because its great for strength gains. Spring and summer, I switch to DB's because it gives my chest a much fuller, thicker appearance (that awesome armor-plated look!). Call me vain, but I like to look good at the beach! IP: Logged |
