I think multiple pieces of the most popular pieces. IE: Bench presses, (FW and Machines), squat racks, abdominals.....pretty much all the ones most people use. Too many times I go to the gym and the benches, racks, machines, are being used, and as you well know 99% of these jokers have no clue how to move the weight....You just have to see what the demand is for what pieces you purchase. Second, make sure it is ALWAYS maintained. Nothing pisses me off more when I goto the gym and the laim staff can't even put a cable back on the roller....Finally an unbias gym that respects accomplishment, and educates. Most gym staff bash all peoples accomplishments....a knowledgable staff is a must. Especially one that can understand the needs of every member....no matter what the goal. Good luck with your gym bro IP: Logged |

Louie Simmons developed this rack... I suppose it is somewhat like a leg curl machine but with various important differences. It works the hamstrings, glutes and lower back. Is it the hyper flex... I don't think so... Damn, the name escapes me, but I always thought to myself that if I ever saw any gym with this piece of equipment they'd have me as a member right there and then. IP: Logged |

I'm with the good loud music. More of a hardcore gym is what I'm looking for. Train hard or get out should be the motto. By my palce I like the Golds gym set up. Lots of equipment and lots of space unlike an LA Fitness. It seems they cator to the 30-50 year old fat ass that gets on a tredmill once a month for 10 minutes. Too much crap. At Golds it's more of a true gym. Oh and have some damn motorcycle parking or don't bitch if we park in the shade by the door! Later, Green IP: Logged |

One thing I like at one of my gyms is to have two complete dumbbell racks that are on opposite ends of the gym. A dead lift platform - could be a simple as 3/4 inch of plywood so that the weights don't "crash" so bad. If you get a decline bench, make sure it is ADJUSTABLE! Some women can't use them because they are to short, and some guys can't cause they are to tall. A narrow length of space to do walking lunges. A squat rack that has SMALL increments for height adjustment. A leg extension that is a center pull, not from one end - they all get out of wack. Music. This will ALWAYS be a pain in the ass. I've often though about rotating the music. Post up a schedule. Hard rock on this day. Techno on that day. But what ever you decide to do, you will piss someone off. ------------------ Lobo IP: Logged |

AS LONG AS ITS HARDCORE NO MOMS OR GRANDMOMS. THE RIGHT ATMOSPHERE WILL ATTRACT THE RIGHT PEOPLE. BUT I KNOW FROM A BIZ POINT OF VIEW A 24HR ATMOSPHERE WOULD MEAN MORE $$$. LOUD MUSIC & PLENTY OF FREE WEIGHTS & BENCHES IP: Logged |

Large variety of free weights and machines are good.A courteous staff a must. What I like most about a gym the most is the atmosphere. This is what I see, BB's giving each other positive feedback, accepting anyone who comes in to make themselves a better person,BB's accepting each others feedback whether they agree with it or not constructively. Call me nostalgic, but I miss this hole in the wall gym my buddies put together several years ago.Everyone was welcome, everyone was family as long as they were there to lift and not flap their jaws. So I guess an atmosphere that would create or lend itself toward a "community" or "Family" would be the most important thing on my own personal list.Manana.... IP: Logged |

How about what NOT to add?? Like personal trainers! Nothing pisses me off more than they do at my gym. They hog three pieces of equipment at one time, sit on the crap to chat for 20 minutes before doing anything, never strip weights, and are generally useless. Most trainer don't know what the hell they're doing. I'd expect their clients to walk out with destroyed shoulders. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Nothing pisses me off more than advertising a service and then being a total flake on it. Also, personal trainers who like are educated and realize that the customer is the one who needs to be pleased. Animal, The one piece of equipment that every gym should have. A reverse hyperextension machine. The other stuff I would have is a deadlift platform. A piece of equipment called a deadlift helper-which is about 80 dollars and is like a crowbar type apparatus( it lifts up one end of the bar and allows you to load/unload the bar) Good calf machines (donkey, standing and calf). Other stuff to have -I think everyone else will mention ------------------ IP: Logged |

i think every gym should have a rear delt machine, the kind i like most look kind of like a peck deck but is universal and you can turn around in it and do rear delts. I think the gym i work out at is about to go under so when i look for a new one im going to find a gym that has that piece of equipment. i like the Nebula equipment to, it looks kind of hard core but they make quality stuff. I think Nebula equipment is going to be in every gym pretty soon. they have the best leg equipment [This message has been edited by bigjohnstud (edited July 28, 2000).] IP: Logged |

Don't skimp on the squat and power racks. My gym has one squat rack. Luckily, there aren't a lot of people who squat in my gym, but I still have to wait at times. This especially blows when someone is doing curls or military presses in the thing. To be fair, I will take up space myself and use it for barbell rows. ------------------ IP: Logged |
