I have a bad patella tendon injury on my left knee, but the only exercise it affects is squats. Does anyone have a good quad workout that doesn't incorporate squats? IP: Logged |

The leg press hits the calves (primary) and the quads (secondary). Sorry to hear about the injury... That sucks. Squats are just a great all-around exercise. They really get me sweating and my heart pounding - gotta be good for heart. IP: Logged |

Man no squats of any kind? I guess try leg presses. Can you still do hack squats? Leg extensions will not build as mass as quickly as squats, but try them as well. It seems to me that you are going to have to try various leg exercises to try and see if they cause you pain. If I take a really really wide stance with the squats it won't hurt as bad, but I want to nip the injury in the bud and not agitate it any further until it's healed. Hack squats don't hurt at all though. I may just go really light and do 20+ reps for a few weeks and burn the crap out of my quads. IP: Logged |

Deltzilla: Sorry, bro, but I gotta ask: You sure, I mean really SURE, that you're not just pussying out when it comes to squats? I gotta ask that, 'cause while every press bench at my gym is occupied full time with guys lined up 3 deep to do bench presses, cobwebs are growing on the squat rack because everyone has a bad knee. Meanwhile, all these bench press junkies look like apples on toothpicks. I'm no monster, I only squat 225 for reps, but I've coached a bunch of guys from where you're at ("I got a bum knee") to squatting 200 or even 300 for reps. You're in Jersey, aren't you? I am. Drop me an email, and I'll give you a consult, if you want. Bjaarki ------------------ BECOME SOMEONE'S HERO! IP: Logged |

I actually love squating that's why it's bothering me that I have to stop for awhile. I was doing around 405 for reps, ass-to-heels, which is why I think I strained it. I have one whole day commited just to quads and deadlifts. So I'm not being a pussy about it. But I understand why you asked. I hear more reasons why people can't do squats/deads. BTW I live in Philly now. IP: Logged |

Deltzilla, I have a nagging right knee from an old soccer injury and squats can be problematic for me as well. Although my knee probably isn't as bad as yours, I found that I can condiiton my knee to avoid pain. First thing for me if I haven't been squatting is to do lots of leg presses for one week before a squat workout. Then, when I hit my squats the next week my knee feels more stable. Also, try to not go as deep in the movement. I found that when I stopped at just below parallel instead of all the way down I could still fry my quads, but my knee didn't get all sore. You may also want to go for a lighter weight until your knee feels stronger. Hope that helps...LOOMZ IP: Logged |

Damn....squats pretty much IS my leg workout. Always do those suckers first, then leg extensions, leg press, and calf raises. IP: Logged |

Leg Presses - Heavy! I have a back problem that prevents me from squatting. I thought it was the end of the world. But I started really getting down on leg presses and to my surprise my leg development was much better than it ever wwas with squats. I think this is because I can play with so many different angles with the leg press. IP: Logged |

Deltzilla: Okay, you're not a pussy, just an injured trooper. Don't give up on squats altogether, though. Maybe do light sets, just to keep up your chops on good form? I've experimented in the past with "overhead" squats, which are not tough on the knees, but are murder on the quads. Take an empty bar, wide grip, over your head to lockout. Now squat, ass to the grass! If you can, add some weight to the bar. Super way to keep your form up. Glad you took no offense at my earlier post, D. Best of luck.
