Batboy intends to resign in wake of steroid incident July 26, 2000 2:35 pm EST BOSTON (AP) - Red Sox batboy Carlos Cowart intends to resign his part-time job with the team as an investigation continues into the discovery of illegal steroids found in the car he borrowed from a player. The Boston Globe reported Wednesday that Cowart had resigned, but the team said later in the day that he had not yet quit, but intends to. Cowart, 20, was arrested June 30 in Boston's Dorchester section on charges including driving without a license. Cowart, who has worked for the Red Sox for four years, had borrowed Boston infielder Manny Alexander's car while Alexander and the team were in Chicago to play the White Sox, according to police. Police said they found illegal steroids in the glove compartment of the car. Alexander had no comment on the matter Tuesday night at Fenway Park, where the Red Sox lost to the White Sox 4-2. Alexander is hitting .205 with one home run in 56 games this season. State police are investigating the matter. "I don't know a lot about it," Red Sox manager Jimy Williams said. "We'll handle it the best way we can, through the authorities. That's all we can do." Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa, a former teammate of Alexander, said he tried to telephone Alexander, but hasn't heard back from him. "I feel sorry for him because he is in a tough situation right now," Sosa told Chicago reporters. "It's going to be tough. Hopefully, that doesn't hurt him. But I don't think he had anything to do with it." Cowart was arraigned in Dorchester District Court July 3 on charges of driving without a license and failing to stop. He was released on personal recognizance. A trial date has not been set. ------------- I wonder how much Manny Alexander is going to pay this kid to take the blame for his riods? IP: Logged |

It will be interesting to see how MLB and the authorities handle this. Will the kid plea bargain and give up a few names? So far, there hasn't been a big media uproar, so MLB will probably sweep this under the rug if they can. It seems very unlikely that the gear was either the batboys or Alexander's (he surely doesn't look like he's juicing). Interestingly, Alexander is a good personal friend of Sosa's, who surely looks like he's done a few cycles. IP: Logged |

Sosa is from the land of plentiful and cheap anabolics and a user without a doubt in my mind. (good for him as so are at least 90% of professional athletes, which i witnessed first hand while playing baseball in the Seattle orginization until my ACL decided to tear.) Too bad this guy had to be caught though. With this bad pub and all the bad pub we'll get from the olympics the propaganda will run rampant as usual. IP: Logged |
