So I go in for a complete physical for my dive instructor certification and the doc decides to get some blood work done. I just got a letter from my Docs office saying I had elevated liver enzymes. I eat healthy, dont smoke, drink about a six pack of ODouls (near-beer) once or twice per week and only have done one cycle about six months ago of sus and deca. They want me to abstain from any alcohol, Tylenol and Advil for 2 weeks and test again. Should I be worried about this? What can I do to lower the enzymes? What the hell is going on here? Thanks in advance. PS. I am 34 5'11" 205lbs 8-10%BF

You should follow thru on what the doc says. Do you take any other medications on a regular basis cause that could be the cause as well... I don't think that meds you did 6 months ago for a short period of time could cause the elevation... it would have to be something you did for quite a while. On the other hand if there is compromised Liver F then it could be NOT related to chemical ingestion but some other organic cause. That's why you have to see the testing thru. Don't compromise your health... at least get to the bottom of it. -Tackler

Depends if the cause is acute or chronic. If you got hammered the weekend before the test and were eating tylenol like candy, that would cause a sudden spike in liver enzymes.

The only way to tell is to lay off anything that is hard on the liver and get tested again. If the counts are still high, you could have jaunice or cirrhosis (sp) of the liver. This is chronic and is no joke.

Regardless, I would spend some $$$ on milk thistle, primerose oil, lay off the orals and listen to the doc.

My father gets his liver count tested regularly b/c some of the med's he's on are hard on the liver. Needless to say, the idiot Doc never mentioned to him that it might be beneficial to him to take the aforementioned herbs to reduce the problem....I went and bought him the stuff.

I did take vicodin about 2 to 3 weeks ago for back/shoulder pain from injury. If I abstain from all scripts/alcohol will it go to normal in two weeks?

Yes. Stay away from the prescription pain killers. The vicadin will put some miles on your liver if you take that shit for a while. The other bro's have it down: pick up some primrose oil and some milk thistle. Pain killers only make you feel better, so drop 'em. Punch holes in your liver from d-bol, not pain killers, but wait until after your next liver check up!

Well also since you on this board you might being doing some sauce. Liver enzymes (toxins) can be caused from gear. Your liver is over working to regen. and rebuild. You liver proceeses all the garbage and it will elevate the toxin levels. You need to lay off the juice also. If your liver is producing high toxin levels then you are stressing your liver too much. Rest it from a couple of months then go get them tested again.

Did you fast before giving blood.... While I was on accutane the doctor required me to give blood every two weeks this meant fasting for 12 hrs prior to doing so. There were several instances I disregarded this and was told that my enzyme levels were to high. I was told this was a comb. of not fasting and being on accutane. Not sure if this is what you are looking for but maybe you can approach your doc about it.

Anything that you had been taking in the weeks before could of helped boost your levels. The Vicodin is no doubt a big factor. Believe it or not even vitamins (some) will elevate liver function. Booze and party drugs are very bad but not your problem. Milk Thistle and Liverite will bring your levels down, Now that I know a lot about the liver I feel just about everyone should use milk thistle or liverite or both. Especially those who take a lot of vitamins or medications. Don't worry though, It will all work out fine. I have a lot of experience with liver questions due to family illnesses over the years. Feel free to contact me if you are worried.

Don't overlook the near-beer, there's something inherently evil about that stuff.

Hey Livin'Large,

They usually check two liver enzimes SGOT and SGPT. Can you tell me what are your values?

Normal levels are a little below 20.

One very heavy user I know had 80! very high

Is your values close to 20?

If no one else has mentioned it I will, Increase H2O intake. By the way, I saw a woman last week in the ER with hep.(not sure which one lab to determine was a send out) her values hit triple digits. Just push fluids and stay away from anything that contains acetaminophen. The cycle you did months ago has long since been out of your system. Also, I have seen false highs on many labs tests

Hey,

I myself have elevated liver enzymes. I had a liver biopsy done just to be sure, and I had slightly inflammed liver tissue, but luckily not around the bile ducts. But the doctor concluded that it was a result of heredity. My parents both have it. He says it will not have an effect on my life down the road, so I wont have a problem with this. To give you an example: I had 5 enzymes that were too high. From a low of 20 to a high of 70, one enzyme was 165. a little over twice as high as it should be. But still no side effects of this will bother me from what the doctor concluded from the biopsy.
