I've been reading alot lately about people that can't sleep. My problem is that I can't wake up. I average between ten and twelve hours of sleep a night. Last night I slept SEVENTEEN HOURS. Is this a problem??? I've been this was for as long as I can remember, and when I do wake up, I'm not tired during the day. Any ideas why I'm like this?

Nope, that's not it. I'm on right now. And I've been like this since I was a kid. I really don't think anything's wrong with me. Just don't understand why I need SO MUCH sleep just to function.

I had the same problem when I was in my teens. How old are you? You asked why you are so tired when you wake up, well it's because your oversleeping. Do you train? If so, how often?

Hey Hercules, I'm 25. And I'm NOT tired when I wake up. When I get up I'm fine till I go to bed. But as soon as my head hits the pillow, I'm out. When I fall asleep, don't expect to see me for at LEAST ten hours. Yes I train also. Any other ideas?

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that your probably not eating enough for your body to give you the energy you need and that could be why your tired. If you dont eat then enough food for your body to run off of then you will feel tired. I suggest you go and get blood work done to see if you are lacking anything. (ex. iron....)

The first concern is liver stress. This may not be a factor since you have had this condition for so long. Nonetheless, it is a good idea to get blood work done. It has been shown that sleep patterns as they exist predominantly in our society today (six to eight hours per night) are learned. When the body is deprived of any external time keeping mechanism, waking time seems to increase to about eighteen to twenty hours, and sleeptime tends to diminish proportionately. If your lengthy sleep cycle detracts from your life, you might try training yourself to sleep less, incrementally, say, half an hour per week, until you reach your desired sleep duration. Another possiblity is that you are not dreaming with the appropriate frequency. REM sleep is the sleep that counts. There are certain medications that disrupt REM sleep.
