procrit is very similar to epo .

Just a diffrent brand. It helps in the

production of RBC's and if used incorrectly

can cause a lot of problems. But all in all

it is a good product if you use it right.

Cancer patients and kidney dialysis patients

use it frequently.I would like to know if

there has been any new info put out

on the use of epo by people with out the

deficency of producing this hormone

(erythropoetin).

EPO must be injected. Initial dosage in studies was 100 units/kg IV 3 times weekly for 8-12 weeks. If the response to treatment is not satisfactory in terms of reducing transfusion requirement after 8 weeks, the dose may be increased by 50-100 units/kg.Pre-existing high blood pressure should be controlled before beginning treatment. Flu-like symptoms usually appear within 1 to 2 hours after starting the infusion and can last for 2-12 hours. These side effects are generally self-limiting and do not require dose reduction. The drug should be used in pregnant or nursing women only if clearly needed. Do not take aspirin or products containing aspirin unless the doctor prescribes them. These medications are often referred to as blood thinning pills. Acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) may be taken instead to relieve pain. This is not because of interaction with this particular drug, but because, most patients using this medicine have a contraindication to the use of non-steroidals. On the other hand, the drug may not work if the patients have sickle cell anemia.

Dangerous side effects such as increasing blood pressure can eventually lead to Heart attacks. Other side effects include chest pain, swelling due to retention of fluid, fast heart beat, increase in number and concentration of circulating read blood cells, skin rash, pain in joints. Headache, nausea, muscle aches, diarrhea, shortness of breath, fatigue, flu-like syndrome and cough may also occur. Side effect such as chest pain, fatigue, shortness of breath are not a result of the medication but may be a sign of complications caused by anemia and/or heart attack.

The maximum amount of EPO that can be safely administered in single or multiple doses has not been determined. Doses of up to 1500 units/kg TIW for 3 to 4 weeks have been administered without any direct toxic effects of EPO itself. Therapy with EPO can result in polycythemia if the hematocrit is not carefully monitored and the dose appropriately adjusted. If the suggested target range is exceeded, EPO may be temporarily withheld until the hematocrit returns to the suggested target range, EPO therapy may then be resumed using a lower dose. If polycythemia is of concern, phlebotomy may be indicated to decrease the hematocrit.

EPO is a chemical naturally produced by the adult kidney. It works to increase the number of erythrocytes (red blood cells). These red blood cells provide oxygen for the muscle to work, and remove waste from the working muscle. So in short, the more EPO floating around the body, the more red blood cells, so the more oxygen to muscles. This creates a good environment for muscles to work in. The net effect is that it takes longer for the muscles to tire, hence better performance when exercising.

EPO is made from the natural human product, and so is impossible to detect. The only detectable feature is a raise in red blood count. However, a high red blood count can also be the natural result of high altitude training or living in Colorado.

Therapy is expensive (average wholesale price of $125 (U.S. dollar) per ml.
