Here's something I found...thought you'd all like to know. From the Washington Post.
In a front page story today, The Washington Post reports that the FBI has deployed an automated system to broadly wiretap the Internet. The new computer system, dubbed "Carnivore," was developed at FBI computer labs and has been used in fewer than 50 cases so far. But that number is sure to rise, said Marcus Thomas, chief of the FBI's cyber-technology section. "In criminal situations there's not yet been a large call for it," he said, but the bureau already has seen "growth in the rate of requests." Civil liberties groups said the new system raises troubling issues about what constitutes a reasonable search and seizure of electronic data. In sniffing out potential criminal conduct, the new technology also could scan private information about legal activities. "It goes to the heart of how the Fourth Amendment and the federal wiretap statute are going to be applied in the Internet age," said Marc Rotenberg, head of the Washington-based Electronic Privacy Information Center. Canada...I guess you haven't heard about the huge govt database Canada has on like very one of its citizens...I'm an inofsec specialist and I would much rather live here than Canada as far as that goes. Carnivore is a threat to privacy, but if you think the govt hasn't or isn't monitoring internet traffic you're sadly mistaken. Can't yet be used in court, but it's a nice way to isolate who to investigate...definitely contact congressmen IP: Logged |
