JimBaker I read that posting,, I guess im still having problems understanding how the package gets noticed if EACH seperate package has a different false return adress. How does customs even know who the hell its from at all ? How do they flag packages (all 985,854,102) with no distinguishing info on the outside??? They cant check them all ....impossible. X, Jim is absoloutly correct. Customs has the ability. I have been waiting on a package from England for over 30 days. They mailed it to me last May. It will come, just like it always does...Late and with the floresent green "EXAMINED BY US CUSTOMS" Every time....no matter what name I use. Return address is not "open" it's different....yet they are on that list, and every time the package gets held for a couple weeks.....gotta be the numbers and the type of packaging. IP: Logged |

I still do not understand how they know which to look at. How does a package containing wildlife pictures differ from a package containing gear? They cannot open them all, mail would take 2 years to get here and be backed up forever. There are no numbers on the outside of the package, no distinguishable marks. IP: Logged |

Don't they x-ray packages in mass when shipped from certain regions. Fedex has conveyor belt x-ray equipment and dogs at all main airport hubs. IP: Logged |

here is one way: U.S. Customs unveiled today at Colombia-Solidarity Bridge the latest addition to its high-tech narcotics detection arsenal, a cargo search X-ray machine. It is the third fixed-site cargo search X-ray the U.S. Customs Service has installed in Texas. Maria Reba, Director of U.S. Customs in South Texas, and Customs Port Director Gene Garza dedicated the X-ray machine as part of an open-house event. Joining Customs officials at the dedication were: John J. Kelly, Department of Justice Southwest Border Official, local directors of other federal law enforcement agencies, consular, trade and elected officials. The event showcased U.S. Customs technology and included information booths for several law enforcement agencies. The $3.5 million fixed-site cargo search X-ray facility resembles a giant carwash. It pulls a tractor by its front wheels and scans the contents of a tractor-trailer in minutes. This non-intrusive search technology is safe to operate and provides Customs Inspectors with state-of-the-art X-ray imagery to pinpoint concealed contraband. The cargo search X-ray employs "flying spot" technology and produces two kinds of X-ray images. (See attached fact sheet for specifics). "The cargo search X-ray will play a crucial role in cargo examination at Laredo. Not only will the X-ray zero-in on drugs hidden in trailers, it will help the port of Laredo facilitate faster movement of legitimate cargo," Garza said. "With this new technology, the port will build on its interdiction successes," Garza added. Operation Brass Ring, a six-month intensified narcotics interdiction effort concluding in July 1998, employed unpredictable inspection tactics and high technology. Customs Inspectors at the port of Laredo seized nearly 9,000 pounds of cocaine and more than 16,400 pounds of marijuana during that operation. To combat the growing drug threat along the Southwest Border, U.S. Customs has been steadily increasing its human and technological resources over the years. The cargo search X-ray system in Laredo is the seventh system the U.S. Customs Service has installed on the Southwest Border. U.S. Customs operates six other cargo search X-ray systems in California, Arizona and Texas. The next Texas cargo search X-ray will be housed at Los Tomates Bridge in Brownsville, which is under construction. U.S. Customs also plans to equip the Laredo Northwest International Bridge, currently under construction, with a high-tech cargo examination system. U.S. Customs Inspectors utilize a wide variety of hand-held technology to examine commercial conveyances: density detection devices, fiber optic scopes and laser range finders. These tools join the stationary pallet X-ray systems in place to examine cargo. Other non-intrusive technology advancements are being developed and tested for use at Southwest Border ports as well as high-risk sea and air ports. peace IP: Logged |
