Fitness Chick,

I am a personal trainer and I have a female friend who wants me to help start training her. Her overall goal is to tone up but she was hinting that she would like to start competing. I have pretty good knowledge as to what it takes for men to bulk up and get bigger, but she doesn't want to get huge she just wants to get tone and look good and possibly compete. What suggestions can you give me, I am open to any knowledge you can give me. Training, diet, gear, everything for women that will help me out. Thank you in advance for the knowledge.

It depends on how she looks now. Women respond very well to weight lifting very simmilar to men. If she is thinking of competing she will need to put on some
quality muscle (not huge) but it will help her to get cut later. When ever I trained
women it seems that they do very well at
slightly higher reps. This is especially good for toning anyway. But this will depend on her body and metabolism. Work with her and
see how she responds. Be carefull with squats
use light weight and high reps. Hope this helped a little everybody is a little different and respond's differently.
When you get a chance get her specs, weight
age, height, cal per day, etc and let us know

Good luck.

She is 21, 120 lb, approx. 5'6", 18% BF. She is already lifting with different people but I worked her out Monday night and she said that I gave her a better workout that night then her past couple of workouts. So basically she said that I am her new trainer. Does any one have any info on a previous diet for women so I have an idea, to put one together for her. Thanks again for the info..

Where is FC anyway? I think she's MIA. Haven't seen her around lately.

Hi everyone, been away for a few days...i am back now......

well as for this q.....what exactly does she mean by toning up......that is a very vague term....if she is looking to put on muscle without getting enormous, she can very well train similar to a man, and if you dont supplement her with a.s., her body wont
juast bulk up over night....I trained super intense & very heavy for 3 years....and drastically changed my body composition without getting a lot of bulk muscle on me...only in the last 2 years when adding as to my training did i drastically increase my muscle.....she can do a 4 day split, one exa, mple would be day 1 chest and bis, day 2 back & calves, day 3 legs, & day 4 shoulders & tris.....take rest days in between as she feels necessary.....as for diet, 2000 cal a day, 1.5 gm. protein per lb. of bodyweight, a good multi vit- multi- mineral.....as far as exercise choices.....incorporate compound movements in....squat bench & deadlift, as well as exercises for definition.....dont be afraid to have her lift heavy...i see women in the gym doing 5 lb dmblls for 20 reps for the last 3 years with little of no results....tell her to pick up the heavier weights & the results will come much quicker....remember women lack testosterone naturally & that limits what our bodies can do naturally....also keep her rep scheme between 8-12 for the most part, occasionally thro in heavier weight that she can only handle for 6-8 reps...any more questions you can let me know. good luck
