I know I have seen this thread before but i can't find it. I am tired of gym politics, and all the crap that goes on there. I want to start working out at home, but don't know the most cost effictive route. I was thinking of picking up a soloflew off of ebay. But I remember something about power racks. Does anyone have any experiences or suggestions. Give me some links.

Ian

theres this place here locally that will custom build you a home gym, really high quality...base component is an olympic bench that adjusts to decline, incline and even military and on the back of it is a place you can squat from, its 300 bucks, then you can get a high low cable pull, same thing, made from steel and heavy fucking duty, its 150, get some dumbells on top of that and youre set...this is alot nicer than tuff stuff brand which is considered the best, the name of the place is 'ed's athletic supply' slc utah...im sure you can find a place like this near you, i would never buy brands like 'weider', 'body by jake' 'impex' etc...theyre made for pussies!

I have considered this recently as my gym membership expires in Sept. I am picturing a bar, 450 LBS of weights, a power rack and a bench. My work outs are primarily squat, deadlift, bench press, military or push press, T bar row, calfs and pull ups.

I posted this before. If you want you can do a search for "home gyms that are worth a shit." it is in the archives.

I would say a smith machine is a good start. Add some dumbbells and maybe a few more leg machines and you are set.

Youll need dumbells from 10 to at least 50 or just get one of those ONE IN ALL adjustable dumbells, they are great save time and money. Then youll need a curl bar, olympic stlyle preferably, a bench press that changes for dips and you can also do preacher, leg ext.curls on also, a lat pulldown, push down capabilities and a low cable for other arm and shoulder movements. Youll need some extensions for different grips and movements, youll need at least 300lbs of weight on an olympic bar. if you can afford it toss in a squat rack.
Bare min. though the adjustable dumbells and an adjustable incline/shoulder press/ flat bench will do. Prob 400 new right there just for those two things.
luck

BOWFLEX hands down!

But a simple chin up bar and dip bar will do you good also for a fraction of the price.

I am very fortunate to have a kick ass home gym 400 squar feet close to 20k in equipment. I love it. Better quality workouts in half the time vs. going to a gym.........if your limited with funds, find any machine that you like and more importantly one that you will use. Push ups and set ups and a basic chin up bar works great.

The only problem I've had with a home gym is the distractions.....people at the door, the telephone ringing, friends all over the house. I'm also more inclined to put in a hard workout knowing that I took the time to drive to the gym......so I'm not leaving until I have to crawl out. At home the couch is just too close

I like the gym too. More dedication on my part when I am there.

Some of my best workouts are at home. Now that I have the new Smith machine I have a good home gym, over 400 pounds of olympic weights, a Pec Dec, adjustable incline bench, dumbells, chinning bar, and one of those Sears multi station gyms (dont laugh you can get a good pump with those). I still prefer the gym, but occasionally I'll throw in a home workout, even if its at 1:00am, LOL!!!

That's where I'm fortunate Yoda....my gym is open aaallll night and it's less than 4 miles away. Plus I'm a bit of an exhibitionist.....and I can't show off in my own house

My friend works out at his house and is still growing. He is a former bodybuilder back in the 80's. Not any big name but he knows his shit. He has got a set up to do barbell bench , lat pulls, tricep extension, squats, rows, etc. Then he also has a leg ext. and curl machine and a leg press. Not sure of the brand names but they all use free weight plates. Ill get back to you with the names.

The best for the buck. Add in a set of dumbbells and you can hit it at home very effectively for under 2 grand. When I don't have time to go to the gym - no excuses.
