Vitamin supplements are often very safe and effective. There are over 100,000 deaths per year from correctly administered hospital prescriptions each year (not including over the counter meds or medications prescribed in an MDs office). There have been but very very few serious side effects from vitamins. In the 1980's there were roughly 1500 people who got eosinophilia myalgia syndrome from taking contaminated tryptophan - it was the contaminants that caused the problem. As a result tryptophan was pulled from the market. In the last 20 years there has been only one documented death from vitamins (compared to the 100,000+ from drugs in hospitals alone) - and that one death was from niacin. Niacin is a two edged sword. The Coronary drug project found that Niacin was the only lipid lowering agent to actually reduce the death rage (J of the Am Med Assoc 231 ; 1975). THe study evaluated drugs, niacin and a placebo. The long lasting effects of niacin were demonstrated in a 15 year follow up of that same group in which they found the death rate was actually 11% lower than the placebo group - even though the group taking niacin quit taking it years before (J Amm Coll Cardio 8 : 1986) Patinets treated with the drugs Clofibrate and Cholestyramine had an increased death rate. Clofibrate was associated with a 36% increased death rate (Committee of Principal Investigators : World Health Organization Clofibrate Trial 1978) Niacin and the drug Lovastatin were compared in a study and it was found Niacin was much more effective (Archives of Internal Medicine 154: 1994). But niacin can be liver toxic! It is not recommended for people with pre-existing liver disease or an eleation of live renzymes. It can cause liver failure. Take it with meals. Do not take timed or sustained release Niacin as they are the most liver toxic (J of the Am Med Assoc 271 : 1994). The safest form is inositol Hexaniacinate (Int Record Med, 174 : 1961 and also Clin Rheumatology 7:1988) You can get Inositol hexaniacinate from a company called Enzymatic Therapies who is the sister company to a company called Phytopharmica. They products are essentially the same its just only doctors and health professionals can order from Phytopharmica. Accepted (but on the high end) doses for niacin are : under 120 LBS = 400 mg, 120 - 200 LBS = 600 mg, over 200 LBS = 800 mg. For more information on cholesterol see post on cholesterol. IP: Logged |

bro your right on target, but if your worried about cholesterol, dont be, it never killed anyone, medical propaganda buddy, niacin is affective in lowering cholesterol, but better in lowering HBP, because of its vasodialating effects, pay more attention to your trigyserides, forget cholesterol, eat it and be happy, but watch the saturated fates IP: Logged |

Nothing cooler than taking niacin right as you're walking out the door to go eat somewhere. Lobsters will have nothing on you when it comes to being red as fuck. When the waitress asks if you're okay, tell her no, and you think you ate something bad. Don't know about the cholesterol but it's worth the free meal! IP: Logged |
