Good film, animal, but I would rather see someone ripped playing the lead role. Russel Crow just doesn't get it as a major bad ass. There is one old gear head in the film. You won't have any trouble picking him out. He looks the part. This would have been a great role for Arnold in his youth. By the way, thanks for the prompt reply on that other matter. Good movie. Several points I really liked. I liked how much thought the actor put into developing the personality of Maximus. The "anchoring technique" (to borrow the word from nuerolinguistic programing) where Maximus gets ready for a real fight by rolling dirt in his hands and then sniffing it was great. The contrast of play fighting and real fighting. After the big battle Commodus stages a pretend fight (kata) with some of the soldiers where they attack him in a predetermined way and he defends himself - Maximus watches with pity as the coward pretends to fight. This is complimented with the scene where Maximus is first in gladiator school facing the big guy from Germania and he throws down the wooden sword with great disdain - and then the big guy whacks him on the infected slash on his shoulder and then whacks him in the crotch, but still Maximus won't play fight. Then when it is time to fight for real Maximus sniffs the dirt and kicks butt. I find it amusing because of the parallel with many "martial artists" who pretend fight compared to many "untrained" people who can reallyt fight. I thought it was great when they were waiting for one of the battles and the guy in front of Maximus loses bladder control and urinates on himself...he is just standing there shakiing and hyperventilating and pissing on himself. he is the first one out of the gate and the big gladiator waiting for him outside bashes him in the head and blood flies everywhere. Commodus was a great villain. he looked sick with those weird eyes and scarred lip. After making a move on his own sister and then not only killing Maximuses wife and son but then telling Maximus in detail how his son "squeeled like a little girl when they nailed him to the cross"....... you could just hardly wait for the son of a bitch to die. The flash forward visions that Maximus had of meeting his family in the wheatfields was a great thread through the movie. What bothers me was how appealing they made the violence in the movie. I think it is too easy for so many of us to really enjoy the bloodshed. [This message has been edited by NoviceJuicer (edited June 04, 2000).] IP: Logged |
