Here's some scarry shit. Aroung 4pm on the way home from a day of river rafting I noticed that my heart had an irregular beat. many beats then no beats, on and on. I go to the Emergency room to get it checked out. W/in minutes they had an IV in each arm and patches on my chest. My heart was in A fib w/ a beat of 150. My upper chamber was quivering and my other chamber was doing all the work. They thought they were going to stop my heart and restart, but after 1 1/2 hrs my pulse was slowing. At 1:30 am I took an ambulance ride 1 1/2 hrs away to a cardiac specialist. My heart finally came around between 3am & 6am. Folks I was scred shitless. If I had gone to bed instead of the E room, I would probably bye pumping iron w/ St. Pete. IP: Logged |

I told them I was on test & of course the first said that was the cause, but the specialist never mentioned anything about it. The scary part is They couldn't find a reason this would happen. It could be a hereditary heart prob. I go back in 2 wks so I'll keep you posted! IP: Logged |

Did they put you on quinidine? The built in rate of the heart is too fast, but it is slowed down by the vagus nerve (cranial nerve X). Whatever caused it, most likely did so by removing the dampening effect of the vagus nerve on the heart so thats natural pacemaker took over. Atrial fib is not good, but unless the ventricles become involved there is no real risk of cardiac arrest. Man, hope you get that rate problem under control. IP: Logged |
