What does the distinct smell of ammonia in ones sweat indicate? From what I've gathered, it is a residue of protein over consumption. Is this correct?

A lot of people get this smell while they are on a pretty heavy cycle. I believe I read somewhere that its drug related

Bros,

I get a terrible ammonia smell out of my mouth when I do more than 45min of cardio, or weight train very intensely. I observed this phenomenom for years, before I ever did juice and while on juice. I don't think it is harmful, but I am concerned about what precipitates this. Truthfully, I thought I was the only one that experiences this.
I would love for someone in the know to give me a scientific explaination of this.
Thanks.

I get the same thing when I do any cardio and sometimes after a really intense workout like legs, but the smell is in my nasal passage when I inhale really hard. I would also like to know what it is.

I'm almost certain it has to do with the consumption of protein. I have noticed that smell (ammonia) ever since I've upped my protien intake.

ammonia smell comes from burning muscle tissue for energy especially from cardio to combat it take bcaa's before cardio.

So essentially what you're saying is that "burning muscle tissue" is different than burning portein? I was was under the assumption that they are the same thing!

We just talked about this in my A&P class. It has something to do with Diabetes or ketosis or something like that. Damn, now I wish I had paid more attention.

With diabetes you are thinking of Acetone breath - which is a fruity smell. Ammonia is purely from excess nitrogen in the body - either too much meat or steroids (creating a positive nitrogen balance). Americans are the biggest meat eaters in the world and many in foreign countries find us stinky as a result...LOL, I know. go figure.

The best natural deodorizer is cholorphyl from green plants. you can eat more greens or go to a health food store and get some liquid chlorophyll. Medically it is often used for people with ostomies (where they get their intestines snipped and the intestines actually come out their abdominal wall and the feces empties into a bag strapped around their abdomen_. With your crap emptying on the outside of your body into a plastic bag a person can develop an odor problem. Cholorophyll keeps ostomy people from stinking. A tsp of chlorophyll and a few green salads (not iceberg lettuce, but some real greens - at least Romaine) will help eliminate your nasty funk.

Then the smell of ammonia is a good indication that you are in a positive nitrogen balance..this would be a good thing then?

I read the whole article and it answered my questions. I would try his concept on cycling protein, however I don't think I could go as low as 20gr/day. I LOVE milk, cheese, eggs and meat. Thanks

Im glad to see we got responses to this. This was a very interesting topic for me. George might be interested in this since he was asking about protein cycleing for his article or report. With the link posted in this thread I think cycleing protein is a good thing. Maybe thats why it seems like I grow when Im on low protein intake from supplaments. Get'n all that crap out of your system has got to be a good thing.

I miss the board on weekends.

OKG is an ammonia scavenger and hate to tell you this but glutamine isn't an ammonia scavenger, it acutally increases ammonia levels in your body!

Ok, I've been thinking about that protein cycling article, and I think I found out why it works.

By limiting your protein level to 20-40gr/day for the recomended 6 weeks, you will probably lose some muscle during that time(even with the extra carbs). Then when you switch to the recomended 1gr/lb bodyweight, you finally give your starving muscles what they deserve and----BANG, MUSCLE GROWTH!!!!!

It sounded cool at first, but the concept seems foolish to me now. Any input?

Hey Rag'nBull, (miles, this is an interesting subject so dont be a dumb shit here) Ok, if what your saying is true, then why do I seem to experience more growth while im on low protein intake? Fuk, now Im freak'n confused! Im still gonna cycle my protein, maybe what you saying is true, but my growth is a steady slow growth through out my off periods. AHHHH, maybe Ive been overtraining and the rest is do'n me good. But try my ass off not to over train. I could really give a fuk about the smell, I just wanna know if Im do'n the right thing here.

George S., I cant wait for your report on this. I hope you see this string and post your report out here for us.

Thanx for you bros. who responded to this. I found it very interesting and informative.
