I am writing an article on "Protein Cycling" and I wondered how many of you already cycle your protein and your experiences with this technique. For those that do not know about Protein Cycling, this is a technique whereby athletes manipulate their protein intake to optimize nitrogen sensitivity. You can do this on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. I am eager to know if this technique is mainstream yet. ------------------ George George Spellwin

I have done this to some degree. In the perspective of nutrients including AS We cycle AS it makes sense to cycle protein also. It seems like after drinking so many protein shakes, that my body will just waste allot of it cuz it just got more efficient at processing it so by cycling the protein it makes sense that body cannot adapt so quickly. I would like to hear more on this from others. Nice Topic. IP: Logged |

Hi George, Long time no see. I also cycle my protein. 6 weeks high, 6 weeks low to moderate. I find that it gives a huge jump in training and muscle when the high phase kicks in. During the low phase, your body adapts much better to utilizing the protein at a very effecient level, so when the high levels of protein are introduced your body uses a larger portion of it than it would have otherwise done. You can use over-training in much the same way, but that's another story. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I for one have always kept my protein levels at around the same all year long. I have however been looking into this since I first saw it posted on the board, and alot of it makes sense. My question is this though...during the down phase of your protein cycle, if you are not on any type of anabolics, wouldnt this throw your nitrogen levels off balance, and possible into reverse? Wouldnt this in turn bring about a certain amount of catabolism? I fully understand how your body would be forced to utilize the protein more efficiently at lower doses...but what about muscle wasting? Do you bump your carbs up higher at this time..??..and if so would that not be somewhat detrimental to your dieting phase? Just Curious, IP: Logged |

Althoug I usually keep my protein pretty constant at 1.5-2 grams per lb, This is a very intersesting topic that I would definitly like to see some info and feedback on. I usually cycle my carbs and fat, but haven't really changed my protein that much. When I am on a cycle, It increases a little involuntarily due to the added calories I take in. IP: Logged |

maybe just shock your body in a two day low protein intake fashion, that way if there is any muscle wasting it's kept to a minimum. good topic. george is there any research on this? IP: Logged |

I cycle my protein somewhat as well. I discovered the hard way that maintaining a high protein diet on a consistent basis, can lead to kidney damage. I've found by cycling, 5 - 6 weeks on, this damage in minimized. The trick is coming off the high protein slowly to avoid fat gains. IP: Logged |

I have tried different protein cycles in the past and I have found that you need to cut back on your training poundages during your lower weeks to avoid overtraining. ------------------ IP: Logged |

1 day per week Ill skip and have no intake of protein supplaments, why - Ive been told it just helps shock your body, but its also my cheat day as far as food (eat what ever Im craving). I also take 1 mth off (not completly, just dont train as hard) every 3 mths. I stop takeing all supplaments and my protein supplament intake drops to maybe a shake a day depending on what I eat. Food intake increases, Seems like this is when I tend to grow the most. Dont really know why Ive adapted this but it seems to work for me. IP: Logged |

I utilized protein cycling last year in which I did 28 days of as little protein as possible (under 30g) and 28 days of over 400g divided in 8 meals with one in the middle of the night and I gained appx. 8 pounds lean but the best part was the feeling I got when I started protein loading. I used no as and it felt like a mild 1 drug cycle because I was so pumped and full, but only for 2-3 weeks. Strange enough, I actually got lean on the carb phase eating about 400g carbs and 150g good fats a day. IP: Logged |

Yes I've read an article that said you should drop your protein intake down slowly over the course of a month, all the way down to 20g of protein/day. Substituting carbs for the protein loss. Never had the balls to try it, but it does make sense, as you would be pushing "reset" on your body so to speak. Wouldn't try it on a cycle though!!! LOL delts ------------------ IP: Logged |

Yah, delts, I don't know about 20grams / day. That's a little low, even for just a little while. I tried cycling protien once. In theory it sounds good, but it didn't really do anything for me. I guess everyone's different. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I hearde that you should actually cycle about every 3-4 days constantly. Never successfully planned or tried it because there is not much documented information on this particular subject. anything that you could find george would be enought motivation to try it... IP: Logged |

I've been doing it for about a year and a half now with good results. I lower my protein intake 2 days out of the week, usually Saturday and Sunday, and I alter the way I eat on some days as well, often eating only one (enormous) meal a day. These are sometimes high protein meals (200+ grams) and sometimes not. I worked this out through trial and error, my own body's feedback, and looking in the mirror. I don't recommend this for everyone, but people who have been BB'ing for several years could derive great benefit from this. IP: Logged |
