My father has cancer of the liver, and as a result of the chemotherapy he has lost a lot of weight. I was wondering, without using AS, what supplements would you recommend him using to put on some weight but not hurt his liver further. Any help would be appreciated.

First, taking these will help his liver out

Standardized silymarin 160 mg + 3x/day

Evening primrose oil 1300 mg 2x/day

Alpha lipoic acid 100 to 200 mg 3x/day

Glycyrrhizinate Forte 1 capsule 3x/day

N-acetyl cysteine 600 mg 3x/day

Glutamine powder 2g to 12g 3x/day (1 heaping teaspoon = 4g, 1 hpg tablespoon = 12 grams)

Omega 3 fatty acids 2 to 3 capsules 3x/day

Lung Tan Xie Gan Chinese herb formula - as directed

For something to help him gain weight, you're going to have to stay away from most steroids, if he's jaundiced then for sure stay away from them. You can try growth hormone, but it's expensive as you know. Get him some gainer shakes, i'm sure he'll like to drink some shakes, as long as his stomach can keep it down. I know the chemo can be very hard for that.

You can try one steroid if you can find it, and that is andriol, it uses a different delivery method and avoids the liver, now that said it must be refrigerated and most on the black market have gone to hell, they're useless, so unless you can get it from a pharm , forget about it.

Thanks for the info,
He's still pretty healthy all things considered (still working). The chemo he's on is not strong enough to cause all the usual nasty sides but he has lost so much weight that none of his clothes fit anymore. He currently drinks an MRP but I'm not sure that's enough, and his appetite isn't very big.

Hey

Sorry to hear about your dad.....I know what ur going through...except my dad actually died.

Anyway.....Steroids are a big NO NO.....until you are sure that the cells have been killed by the chemo.

Taking any form of anabolic/androgenic steroids whilst been diagnosed with Cancer is plain stupid (no disrespect to anyone). As is also increasing protein intake. Doing any of these will only feed the cancerous cells.

Having said that I cant believe someone would even consider any AS use when being treated with chemo., let alone recomending its use
