My girlfriend just asked me how many calories she should be taking to lose weight. She doesn't keep track of her intake, but wants to start. Could someone help me out with this one? She's 5'11" 147lbs How do you find out what your intake should be, so you lose? IP: Logged |

I am not an expert, but I will say this. Have her start by counting her caloric intake over the period of three or so days. Then have her reduce this average number by about 500 or so calories for a week then go back up 500 for a week then drop again. I think this will work to confuse the body and keep the metabolism speeded up. Hope this helps some. Later. IP: Logged |

The customary numbers to use to figure weight maintenance is to multiply weight by 12. So someone weighing 147 would need 1764 calories/day to maintain their current weight, and would want to cut 300-500 calories in order to lose weight. This drop in calories shouldn't be immediate, but should take place slowly over a few days so that the body isn't shocked into thinking it's being starved. Cardio can also be used to help with the calorie reduction. IP: Logged |

One of the best way to determine basel matabolism rate is to take the weight and add a zero to the end ...in this case 1470 and then add the weight to that total 1617 that is with and average muscle mass and no activity....so if she want to lose i would say to go to 1500 and add some arobics 3 times a week ,should lose about a pound a week... 100% BMR is 1846 for a 150lb woman. 70% BMR is 1292 for a 150lb woman. Have her do a day at 100% and two at 70% and it will go. I add to it by exchanging carbs for protein. It'll go faster if she can keep carbs below 60 but it's easier to keep them below 100g. Good Luck IP: Logged |
