I think people are very confused on the subject of bench pressing. I read some of these posts and guys think that a smith machine press is the same as the bench press, WRONG! Also, if you want to brag about a big bp then put up or shut up and do a meet. In a bench meet you are scrutinized by 3 referees. I just hit 550 last week in the gym, but my best competition bench is only 525. The 525 means much more to me because it was verified and validated. Do you think Michael Jordan or anyone would care about some guy from fucking no where, that is supposed to be better than Jordan but he does not want to compete. My point is made, gym lifts are garbage and yield zero leverage for bragging rights. Bragging rights are earned the hard way the competition platform regardless of what sport. And for all those that say they don't really care about competing, maybe you are just scared. LIFE IS A COMPETITON.

You got a point, and 525 is no joke.

But I verify my own lifts. I've been doing this a while now, so I'm pretty good at it.

Matt

PS I have never benched 500. max 415. But I will get 500 soon (I'm young). And I'm going to verify it myself!

I have seen your posts before, and I know you are a true powerlifter, MONSTROSITY. You have very good points. Most people do not understand how difficult and how disciplined you must be in a meet. Not to mention waiting around, nervous tension etc. Until you have competed, you will never know the feeling. My competition lifts generally are 20-30lbs less than my best gym lifts. I have hit between 425-560 on the bench in sanctioned competition atleast 20-30 times in the last two years in the 181 and 198 class. I need to get 600 in a sanctioned meet below 200lbs. Iw will happen this year. Competition is no joke and for those of you who think it is...all I can say is give it a try and I will see you on the platform.

Grip,
I wish you the best on your quest for 600, I too will hit 600 soon!! Your's will be more impressive though because I will probably need to lift in the 275's(I am 6'1). I have done 520 at @238(242 whgt class), that was in a bench meet. I just recently hit 525 in a full meet(weighed 252), squatting first really takes a lot out of you. I know I am capable of hitting 550+ at 242.....just need to lean out, that would put me in the top 20 in the USA POWERLIFTING rankings. Grip, your rank must pretty damn high!!!! I saw Waterman hit 620 something last year in ME, he won $5000............you are not too far away. George Halbert has also dropped to 198, he just hit 630........impressive! 600 will come!

Waterman just did 600 in Louisiana (biggest bench on the river) last week. Him and Jess Kellum got in a fight at the meet and one of them head but the other. Those guys have been competing way longer than me andwhen they hit those big weights, they are most of the time wearing triple ply shirts. I have respect for them, but my day is here and I know 600+ at 198 is real close. I don't do full meets, but I know that the squat has to fatigue you big time. Up until 8 mos ago I was all natural so with my extra supplementation, my numbers should continue to rise. My rankings are very high in the pl usa and the 181 rankings coming out in December should have me at #1 and the January which has the 198'2 should have me either top 3 or top 5 as it is now. Still have 5 or so competitions which include two nationals and two worlds where the judging is extra hard.
