I would like to clarify some misconceptions about bench shirts. In previous posts it is clear that many do not understand how they work. I am an experienced powerlifter and strongman(a light one at 250, but lean and fast). I have hit 525 in a bench meet comp. Powerlifters use shirts for many reasons, but it was invented to help protect the shoulders and chest when heavy weights are being used. When I first tried a bench shirt, I got nothing out of it. Just like any tool you need to become skilled with it before you realize gains. Anyone who doubts someones srength that benches 500+ with a shirt should try it for themselves. I have also seen many pecs blown out from people not using shirts with BIG weights and poor form. To get the most out of a shirt you have to have superhuman tricep strength, the shirt only helps in the hole(near the chest). So your triceps will make or break your lift. I have seen many that BP 405 with no shirt then put one on and still get only 405 b/c there tris are only capable of handling 405. I train with bands and chains attached to the barbell, this elicits a variable resistance effect that builds amazing explosion. Once you have built super explosion you will be much stronger and faster. The bottom line is that you will get ZERO out of a bench shirt unless the work capacity and absolute strength of your tris is top notch.

Very good post...well explained and I agree 100%. I work my tri's harder than any other group for that reason alone. I am a bench specialist and tri's are bare none the most important muscle on my body.
