depends on how you feel bro. if you feel confident in your muscle etc. go for it. you could go check local small shows to see how some of the guys look etc. ive been to alot of shows and always end up saying, i have better this or that than that guy. but the fact remains....hes up there and im not. guarantee that noone gets laughed at who diets down and comes in diced. noone. its hard work to get your bodyfat down so low and the spectators and judges know it. if you have some quality muscle and you think you can cut up well, shoot for a show. gives you a goal, may help your overall gains. give yourself about 8 months to hit up a bulk phase and then some normal time and then precontest phase. good luck ------------------ IP: Logged |

Let me tell you this i was 6' 270 8% and i looked like shit i dont think weight has anything to do with it look at shawn ray he competes at like 220 but nasser competes at like 260 (correct me if i am wrong) so as you can see i think it has to do with how you look not how much you weigh ------------------ IP: Logged |

Height and weight factor will vary from individual to individual. Bone density can make someone 5'6" weight 30 lbs heavier than a person of the same height, yet means nothing when competing. Example- I am 5'8" tall with very small bones and weigh 180. My friend is also 5'8" and has joints 3x the size as me. He weighs 205. Now when you compare us I look thirty pounds heavier because I have developed a lot more muscle. However I am not thirty pounds heavier. His arms are 15 3/4" while mine are just about 18inches. What I am saying is that height and weight do not determine who is more developed. A person who is 5'6" with a 98lb frame that goes to 180lbs is going to look a lot bigger than a person who started at 145 at the same height. The best way to go about it is the mirror. Look at IFBB pro Flavio Baccanini. 160lbs at 5'1" tall. He is a 160lb pro. I always laugh when I'm in the gym, and there is a guy walking around thinking he is large because he is 5'11" tall. Yet has NO developed muscle, just a layer of fat. Building muscle is not the same as having a tall or large frame. Competing is based on MUSCULAR DEVELOPMENT, SYMETRY, BODYFAT, POSING ABILITY, AND ABILITY TO SHOW YOUR MUSCUALRITY. As far as bodyfat goes. 3% to 5% is where you will need to be. Unfortunately this is a very complicated question and I hope I was able to shed some light to those of you who are considering stepping on stage. I can't tell you how many time I have helped run a show and some 200lb 5'8" guy comes out with an attitude like he is the shit, and the only thing he has going is chest, arms, and a thick mesomorphic build. Not to say this person could not do well, they just think they are much farther along because of the idiots blowing up his ego. Than a full blown 200lb, tanned ectomorph comes out and dwarfs him. Than that guy goes back to his gym and vries ROIDS destroying the rep of the sport. Yet he took them too. Don't be one of these. If you are not educated about bodybuilding, or the only thing that is making you compete is your popularity with the non-educated gym member who has never even seen a show except on TV. Than you should definately attend a competition first. Don't let anyone tell you that you should compete if they are only looking at your frame size. ANDRE THE GIANT WAS HUGE, but could never be a bodybuilder. Put clothes on ANDRE and than put him next to Flavio in the gym (CLOTHED) and 99% of the people in the gym would say that Andre or any huge framed guy would blow him away. Anyone who is an educated bodybuilder would immediately see that this would never happen. You need to start at where your genetics have put you and develop from there. RON COLEMAN IS HUGE. DO you think he would have won the Olympia weighing 230lbs? He developed his muscle to grow to the mass he needed to dwarf competitors for his frame. It's all in how much muscle you can put on your frame, and how well you diet and shred down to keep it and show it. REMEMBER THIS LAST THING: MOST EVERYONE IN THE GYM THINKS FOR SOME REASON THEY HAVE THE ABILITY TO BECOME A BODYBUILDER. MOST DO NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE TOO STUCK UP TO ACTUALLY EDUCATE THEMESELVES SO THEY COULD ACHIEVE IT. INSTEAD THEY USE THE STEROIDS AS AN EXCUSE FOR THEIR LACK OF ACCOMPLISHMENT. It's very sad that the majority of gym members think this way. Very sad. However very true. IP: Logged |

About the only local shows that drug test are "natural" shows. Even Nationals will list if they will drug test and what they will test for. How convenient. How big to compete: Check the mirror. At 5'6" it will still depend on your frame. If you have a wide waist and thick joints, you may have to build up to heavyweight to look muscular enough to place well. In this case plan on getting up to 250 before you start your four month diet. If you have a very small waist and joints you might do very well as a lightweight or middle. Remember - the judges dont score you on body weight or strength. It comes down to how you look. If you can get cut - go for it!. Lean muscle wins the show over absolute size. Check out some local shows to compare yourself to the competition. Dont compare yourself to the pros in Flex or you will never want to compete. IP: Logged |
