A short list of WWFM (what-works-for-me): (1) Get to know your source a little. It is never enough to send a few emails to someone behind a generic email account. You have no clue if you are dealing with an individual with integrity or scammer. You also do not know if you are corresponding with a police officer or law enforcement or DEA task force agent setup just for this purpose. They will adapt to your style of writing and will quite effectively disguise themselves including the deliberate use of spelling errors in correspondence. (2) Establish rules of conduct. For example, ask "What are your suggestions in case I do not receive my package?". Read the reply and suggest your terms. It is quite normal to have to wait for packages coming via customs for 4-8 weeks. It happens. If there is a delay in sending, have agreed on steps on how to proceed next. Do not panic. Decide before you buy what to do and then follow that plan. (3) If you are having problems receiving satisfactory replies now, move on. If you have decided to stick with one person, then stick with this person. Do not assume that just because your mail is not replied to within 24 hours this individual must be a scammer. Life happens. People get sick, emergencies can occur with ordinary people. Your contact may not actually spend his/her entire time glued to the terminal and keyboard reading and replying to email. (4) Cultivate alternate contacts. While you are buying from one place, get to know one or two more contacts. Be aware that you may in fact be writing to the same person with multiple email accounts. So, use common sense in your approach. (5) Do you have a PO Box or alternate address far away from home and business? If not, get one. You don't want someone bursting in via your front door while you are having family dinner - do you? (6) Don't get greedy. Buy small amounts, collect all the items before you get started, take your time to research what your goals are and stay with these goals. (7) Spend time at the local library or Barnes and Nobles bookstore. Read the books on steroids. Read the authorized and unauthorized autobiographies. Meditate on the material. (8) Establish a doctor-patient relationship. Get periodic blood work. Monitor your liver values, lipids and CBC. IP: Logged |

Thanks Ballard, All good advice. The only thing I'm still confused about is the PO Box deal. Around here you are required to show ID in the form of a state drivers license etc. Forms that are hard if not impossible to fake. If the box is in your real name anyway what protection is there in getting one? IP: Logged |

Ballard, what you say makes sense. I particularly enjoyed "Your contact may not actually spend his/her entire time glued to the terminal and keyboard reading and replying to email." We're too conditioned to immediate response (I know I am). It's easy to forget a source has other things going on, may live in a different part of the country or world. IP: Logged |
