![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The most abundant anterior pituatary hormone is human growth hormone(HGH or GH), also known as somatotropin. Besides causing body cells to GROW, HGH has MANY effects on METABOLISM. Generally, HGH stimulates protein sythesis and inhibits protein breakdown, stimulates lipolysis, the breakdown of triglycerides into fatty acids and glycerol, and retards use of glucose(blood sugar) for ATP production. Most effects of HGH are indirect. The one direct effect of HGH is to promote sythesis oand secretion of small protein hormones called INSULIN-LIKE GROWTH FACTORS(IGF'S), previously called somatomedins. Structurally and functionally IGF'S are similar to insulin. However, their GROWTH PROMOTING EFFECTS are even MORE POTENT! In response to HGH, cells in the liver, muscle, cartilage, bone, and other tissues secrete IGF'S. They may enter the bloodstream from the liver or act locally in other tissues as autocrine or paracrine substances to enhance growth. IGF'S cause cells to GROW and MULTIPLY bty directly increasing the rate at which amino acids enter cells and are used to sythesize proteins. Thus, HGH enhances protein ANABOLISM(a good thing). Also, IGF'S decrease the breakdown of proteins and the use of amino acids for ATP production. Due to these effects, HGH increases the growth rate of the Skeleton and SKELETAL MUSCLES during childhood and teenage years. IN ADULTS, IT HELPS MAINTAIN MUSCLE AND BONE SIZE and PROMOTE HEALING of injuries and TISSUE REPAIR. IP: Logged |
