How many of you can perform 1 rep of a single armed pull up. It must be fromm fully stretched, with no bounce off the floor and the un used arm is not allowed to make contact with the used arm.

In my 13 years of training I have only ever seen one person do it. I cannot either.

I read an article about it in No Bull (a UK BB. mag) the other day and it stated that in order to perform one rep you should be able to do at least 33 with two hands!

I can do one rep with one arm and then my arm
completely atrophies. I have VERY STRONG
arms, and I am the only one of two people that
I know of that can do this. The other guy
is a skinny 150-lb Taek-won-do black belt.
It all depends on your biceps, triceps AND
FOREARMS. Hell, I have yet to lose an
arm wrestling match in all my life.
I'm 208lbs BTW Strengthmonster.
Train your forearms for a month or so and
you shouldn't have any problems.
The second rep is a killer though. I have yet
to do one. My arm just becomes jell-o and I
lose my grip.

Godspeed

This is for the guys 150 or less, I think many of us are to bulky to be able to do that you have to be small and cut! Although I am going to the gym in a half hour so I will see how impossible it really is!

Good one Fonz. That is quite an accomplishment if you did it properly. It is possible but requires some bloody arm strength! Plus as already mentioned; the heavier you are, the harder. How tall are you Fonz? or more to the point - do you have long arm? I'd imagine longer arms would be a major disadvantage on these, due to leverages.

It is not something I desperately want to achieve as I am a bodybuilder but it would make a decent party trick. It is surprising how hard it is to do. If you've never tried they sound fairly easy - until you do!

Bump for the evening crowd, any more for the challenge?

I'm 5"9, and the other guy that can do it
is 5"10. I have normal arm-span, but you're
probably right in thinking yjat the taller you
are the harder its going to be. Due to bigger
range of motion. and larger centre of gravity.

It's a great party trick, and it might save your life if you were hanging off of the edge of a cliff, but it really doesn't have any practical uses. I can do heavy barbell rows and deadlifts and build a huge, and powerful back. Will I ever be able to a one handed pull-up? Nope. Will I be able to throw a refrigerator on top of the guy I catch banging my girlfriend? Yep. You have to focus on whats important LOL. Anyhow, it's a great accomplishment, but myself, I would rather be heavy and bulky and strong as an ox.

I am 237 lbs now, low body fat around 8-9%, very strong arms (my best part) and I can not do it.

You must weight much more less to do it, if you are over 200 lbs it is very very very hard.

when I ran track some of us had pull up competitions - I sucked at it, but some of the guys that were climbers and worked out regularly on the climbing wall - these guys would do multiple one armed pull-ups.
they were little though (under 150).
one of our sprinters was huge and he could do... I forget what he called it - a russian pullup? anyway, you start hanging and then you do a pull up and then end on top of the bar with your arms straight. it is hard as hell to do and he could do several of them.
it looked like a gymnastics move.

I'd have to see it to believe it, even at 150lb. I don't know many guys that weight who could do a 150lb 1 arm dumbell curl for reps and you should certainly have the strength to do that - similar movement - only easier to cheat by swinging. Are you sure it was truly 1 hand and the other wasn't holding the forearm. Saying that if anybody can you would expect it of a rock climber.

these were little distance guys - one was my height (6'+) and only 120 lbs - very skinny. the other was little, 5'3" or so and probably the same weight.
they were very skinny and very cut, and they had huge shoulders and were disgustingly strong in the arms. they were from the moutnains of tennesee and had been climbing their whole lives.
one fo them moved to portugal to teach, not sure what he is up to, the other started his own outdoor adventure sports company and he takes people up mountains. they were apparently both very good at climbing, and sure as hell kicked my ass (the best I ever did for pullups was 12 with two arms - I really suck).

I have a pull up bar in my garage, so of course I has to try it. I can get my chin to the bar but that last phase is a bitch. So I failed. I'm sure with practice I would be able to do it in one month. i weigh 172 at 5'8 8%bf. It seriously feels like your wrist is going to snap. I think if my forearms were bigger and stronger I might be able to do it.

SO if a 200pound guy can do one singlearm pull-up then he should also be able to strap on and extra 200 pounds to his waist and use both arms.
Now when you look at it that way- then thats a challenge. Can you see the guys at the gym when you strap that much weight to your waist and then complete a single rep.

.
