** How can you work on a muscle group ONCE a week and expect it to get bigger and stronger? Wouldn't something like every other day or third day be better? ** What exactly is overtraining and what does it do to you? Because I have a friend in gymnastics and they train every day for hours and they get big and strong.

For the best results one body part per week is best. Arthur Jones has written more about it than anyone alive I believe. You can read his books or go this website that is devoted to it. www.cyberpump.com For those who don't know AJ is the man that invented Nautilus. ------------------

Every other day? I don't know about you, but after a good workout I'm sore for 2-3 days and couldn't even think about training again. Training once a week is ideal for me. I use enough intensity that once a week will suffice and I have time to recover before my next workout... ------------------

Simplist answer. Muscles grow while at rest. Not while at work. Working out tears down the muscle(injures them). To prevent further injury they grow and get stronger...they compensate for the stress that lifting puts on them. They have to heal and then grow....This takes time...In most cases up to a week to fully recuiperate. If you train them too frequently they don't have the time to heal themselves and thus can't get bigger or stronger. [This message has been edited by Beezers (edited April 22, 2001).]

soreness is your muscle recovering from your workouts. you should train each muscle once a week with enought intensity to stimulate it. i go 5 on 1 off or 4 on 1 off. i seitch it up every 4-6 months to stimualte some new growth.

iF YOUR ON A SUPER CYCLE OR SOMETHING THEN YOU COULD TRAIN TWICE/WK BUT I WOULDN'T GO MORE THAN THAT. ANYONE WHO DOES THAT IS OVER TRAINNING.

we used to workout upper body EVERYDAY in our high school gym. and the results were incredable. you get so used to it, you WILL NOT get sore no matter what you do, i swear! it takes about a month of doing so. my bench was going up 5lbs per week. i never really understood how that all came together and worked ------------------

Just cause your muscles aren't sore doesn't mean they're completely healed and aren't still recuperating. And if they aren't sore for awhile after a hardcore workout then you aren't working hard enough. Even while I'm doing a 3x/week 45 mins circuit I created while cutting I get sore. Perhaps if you've hit a plateau and can't seem to gain then shocking the muscles with hitting them 2-3x/week might help but I'll never go below at least 6 days recovery time between workouts for each individual bodypart. But of course everyone's different and what works for some might not work for others. Switched
