is this too much? i know your muscles crave the protien the most asfter your workout.
i happen to eat 2 frozen pizzas, a can of tuna and 2 scoops of protien powder. it came to 160g. i have heard your body can only use 60-70grams at a time, is this true.? and how much do you get out of your post workout meal?

This is a good topic....I can eat almost non-stop after a workout. I like to have an "almost" empty stomach when I work out otherwise I feel sluggish. So let's say I work out at 6:00 pm. I have to eat my last meal by around 3:45 or 4:00 so I can fell my thermos kick in and have an empty stomach when I work out, If I work out for 1.5 hours, get home at 8:00 I have not eaten in 4 hours, so I just pig out (on clean foods of course). Then I usually eat again before bet time.

If you start shitting like a goose, you'll know that it's too much. Start off with like 80 grams, then after a week up it to 100 grams, then after another week go up to 120 grams, etc.

This will give your body a chance to get used to all that protein. My philosiphy is the more the better with protein, as long as you can digest it. T

I know some will argue, but there have actually been studies that show that even one huge serving of protein and then regular amounts throughout the rest of the day will increase your nitrogen retention tremendously.

right after I work out I slam down like 8-10 lightly salted rice cakes for the super high gi they have.

Half an hour later I chug a myoplex with 10 grams of creatine.

An hour after the shake, I eat a meal like .5lbs of chicken w/ a cup of brown rice and some veggies.

right before bed I drink a shake with flax in it.

I've been taught that the 2 most important meals of the day are bfast and post workout. I really think thats true.

HOLY SHIT! That's a huge post workout meal. 160g.?!! Most guys don't get that in a day. I wouldn't go quite that high. I think ajc said it best. Try 80g. One thing I will add, watch the frozen pizzas. You don't want fat delaying gastric emptying time. Your muscles need the protein and carbs fast, don't make them wait. later.

My ideas on this topic: (i have no schooling in this area.....this is based on a few thing i have learned from other people, basic books, and logic)

Okay the first thing the body needs after a work out is..................SUGAR. After a hard work out your body will need pure quick instant energy.
If you dont things you need (like protein) will be broken down and used for energy.(something to do with low glycogen stores)

This was prescribed to me, by a guy with arms that are bigger than my head:
a simple protein shake with double the protein mixed in WATER with a Heaped TABLESPOON of white sugar.
And if you can afford it a BCAA tablet.
I guess creatine and Chromium would be good at this point

and then have a large meal after that (dont know how long, but i usually wait an hour)

From what i know 160 grams of protein is toooooo much. Your body cant digest that much....and if it does it will be in a different way (broken down to be used as energy and not used as "building blocks")

Thats exactly what i do post workout- 8oz skim milk, 44 grams whey, and a good heaping scoop of sugar. I'd say the carbs are just as important if not more than the protein post workout since you're body goes from (roughly) burning glycogen to fat then to muscle depending on the workout time. I have 50-60 grams whey protein and 50-60 grams of another source, usually eggs or some type of meat. Poor boy here so I'm not picky about the fat too much and eat ground beef and the whole egg. But I usually do all that in the span of 60-90 mins, nice and slow. Alot of it also depends on how much juice your on too.

Sorry Mikey, the pizza is loaded with, im sure, a large amount of Saturated fat that will slow down the GI ratings and lower insulin sensitivity. The tuna will lower the GI Rating/digestion even more (considerably). BTW, a cheese pizza on the GI list has an average GI rating of 60 (glucose index). Depending on what else was on the pizza will also effect the GI rating. Also, this is based on a 50 gram serving size of course, which means that you definately had more, and it will thus slow down the GI even more. Are you having problems with the post-workout meals I suggested? If so e-mail me and we'll work on them. This is THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL TO GET RIGHT!!!

No flame intended. We want a high GI carb and table sugar isn't your best choice. is it bad? probably not, but a better choice if you can afford it is a maltodextrin carb found in products like Ultra Fuel or Carbo Force.
