Have any of you given almost zero carb diets a try? If you do not eat carbs your body goes into ketosis, a state where you burn fat for energy. If you are getting enough calories, with only a maginal deficit, supposedly you can retain muscle but cause your body to be more likely to burn stored fat, as well as dietary, for energy. I have also heard that you should not stay in ketosis for too long. 5 days on and 2 days of is the recommendation I have gotten. I have only been doing this for like 3 days, has anyone been successful in sheding some unwanted fat using this method?
Thanx
Mark

First of all, you need to buy Lyle's book and read it thoroughly. Then go to the drugstore and spend $6 on Ketostix (behind the counter). Ketostix is used to determine if you're in ketosis by doing a urine test. It's very difficult for first timers and if you can live through the first week then you'll be alright. You'll lose 5 lbs in the first week, but don't get excited because it's only water weight and glycogen that you lost. The fat loss will follow next.

It's not as easy as it looks, I've tried it successfully. But I've also dieted using regular calorie counting technique and prefer this over Keto method. The advantage of a regular calorie counting diet is, you have the flexibility to satisfy your craving. Let's say you're on a 2000 kcal diet and you feel like getting some icecream. You can get your icecream and just subtract it from your total, and then adjust accordingly for the rest of the day. In keto diet, you can't have your icecream or else it'll take you another 2-3 days to get your body back to ketosis.

Keep in mind that both of these diet have one thing in common - you gotta eat less calories than you burn.
