A hormone is a chemical message. Receptors are like mail boxes. Only when they get mail they send a signal to the nucleus of the cell. In muscle cells, the receptor sends a message to the nucleus to copy the a segment from the myosin gene which the ribosomes translate and begin to make contractile proteins by assimilating various patterns of amino acids which it takes from the cytoplasm that surrounds it. The more receptors that are bound by an androgen, the more messages to begin construction of contractile proteins. When you get a lot of contractile proteins stranded together, you get more muscle fibers (not more cells per se) which makes you stronger and bigger.
There are a lot of other processes that go into this and there are various other types of receptors, but that is a pretty simple example. Testosterone = androgen which binds to androgen receptor which sends message to make bigger muscles.
But, you have to tear down the muscle fiber in order for the nucleus of the cell to carry out the orders from the receptor. There is a feedback mechanism. If you don't tear down the muscle fiber through working out, the contractile proteins aren't made to make it stronger. Contractile proteins will still be made, only not as much as they would have been had you properly broken down the muscle fibers (hypertrophy) through weight training.

Damn, stew, that was very clear and straightforward. Thank you!

This sure beats the hell outta 'my 3 year old is taking d-bol, how much milk thistle should she take', or 'juice made me stink'.

Bump for Stew's excellent post. Now I truly understand how androgenic hormones influence muscle growth.
