I see all these big guys in the gym training with weights (not cardio) for 2-3 hours. I read in magazines when they do stories on the top ifbb pros and they list out their schedule of only weight training and they stay in for at least 2 hours. I see some guys doing way too many sets but the way they look I think I will try it. Some of these people including girls look at me like im not serious and give me a look like "if your not serius then get out because they want to use the equipment". I use perfect form and try not to overtrain and I see some people in the gym for hours. Am I not in long enough. How long are you in the gym.

You would get along with MeanOne great. He's one of those perfect form, 35 minute workout guys, and I guess it works for him. Me, I spend about 2 1/2 hours a day in the gym, 3 days a week. Chest and Arms day one, Legs day 3, back and shoulders day 5. 9-12 sets per bodypart. I pick three exercises, one for strength and mass, one for shape, and one for a good stretch and contraction. I take my lead from Shawn Ray, I've been training like this since 93 when I saw his video "To the extreme." It's worked very well. I rarely go to faliure, I use resistance and volume of work to build up size.

My leg workouts are just over an hour, the rest of my workouts are just under an hour sometimes two a day. Shorter rest periods, higher intensity. Really what it comes down to is what works for you. Some people can do a longer duration of training, some people respond better to shorter, intense workouts. For me, I like to workout twice a day if time allows it. Two, 45 min sessions 5-6 hours apart, same body part. If you are growing from shorter intense workouts, then who cares if someone workouts for 3 hours. I personally belive in the shorter intense workouts.

If you go a bit more than an hour worth of intense weight resistance training, it becomes catabolic and it's not going to be beneficial to you. This is unless you are a big time roid user. I'm wondering how anyone, without f**king around, need more than an hour? If you go 4 sets of 6-8 reps with 2 minutes in between sets doing 4 subsets, I just don't see how you can go over an hour.

The only time I am in the gym for over an hour is if I get talking too much, which I try not to do. Assuming your doing one body part a day there is no reason to be in there for hours at a time. Eat, Train, REST and Grow....Peace. RT

I train less than hour too. Working id fine, but i have lot oyhers things to do and ican spend 2-3 hours in the gym. Shorter trains are best for me. I train Finnish bodybuilding program called Mega Duty it is pretty much like Heavy Duty. My trainig routine looks like this tuesday: chest, shoulders and triceps benchpress thursday: back, biceps, abs deadlift, bend over row, latt pull down barbell curl, preacher curl and abs crunch saturday: lages and abs sguat, leg extension, leg curl, calf raise and abs crunch This system with warming up can be done less than hour and it is just great. By the way Dorian Yates used Heavy Duty method and he was great, Mike Menzer was pretty good too. Less train more intensity ------------------ [This message has been edited by joeljuice (edited March 31, 2001).]

I'll restate what has been stated already. If you're workouts last over and hour you are either overtraining or have a severe lack of intensity. I have never read about pros or even read advice for that matter that says a pro or wanna be pro should be in the gym at least two hours. My guess is that is when they are preparing for a contest and doing cardio as well. After a certain amount of work and time you will become very catabolic from a hormone response. That leads to the severe breakdown of muscle tissue thus inducing overtraining.

Dorian yates have said that you can wether train hard or long, but you cant train hard and long. That is the thing ------------------

I have historically trained for two hours, now have it down to 1.5 hours and will be shooting for 1 hour. For me it simply is a lack of focus, last night I stayed focused and worked intensly for an hour and 15 minutes. Better result. Of course 750mg of Test ethantate this week helps that intenstity.

Screw what people in the gym think! Everyone there thinks they know the correct way to train and they might-for themselves. Do what works for you and let your results speak for themselves. I personally workout for about an hour, sometimes 1.5 hours if I'm doing higher volume and on a cycle. If I'm off AS, then never longer than a hour for the same reasons stated by the other fellas.

If you use perfect form, and I mean perfect form, and put your mind and soul into each rep then you will not do more than 2 exersises of 4 sets. 30 to 40min is plenty. These guys that lift huge amounts of weight probably arent doing the exersise the way its ment to be done. Have a look at people when they train and you will see that most of them are doing it completely wrong.(I should know, I study exersise science) And im not flaming bros that lift heavy just the ones that lift too heavy and compromise form.

I look at these marathon workout people in my gym and they NEVER go to failure or approach the intensity I put into my workouts. I feel that if you are not totally beat after an hour you are not putting enough intensity into your training. These are typically the people who look the same year after year. I keep a log and always strive to beat my last performance. 3 days a week for an hour works best for me. A little more volume when I am on. ------------------

All of my workouts are only 45 minutes to an hour. It seems to work fine for me. There's one guy in my gym that works his ass off and wonders why he can't gain any weight. I tried to explain to him that he's probably overtraining, but he doesn't understand how that could be possible.

When I first started working out I used perfect form and lifted slow worked out for 5 dys a week 1 hour workouts. Now that I have been lifting for quite some time I have have modified my workout. To gro I work best at 1.5-2.0 hours in the gym except for legs about 1 hour. I lift with good form but faster and heavy weigths. I see all these people with set training splits but thats not me I lift what feels good and I take off a day or two when I feel my body needs it! Mass Monster

As far as pro's not working out long, pick up some of their training video's many of them train for up to 3 hours, including the biggest in the sport like Kovacs and Ruhl. Hell Ruhl does 20 sets of just machine seated presses for shoulders and then 3 other exercises! Anyway, it all comes down to what works for you, but please don't generalize that if you train long it won't work, because it's been proven over time, and it does work for SOME people, just like short training works for SOME people.

Sounds like I have been over training! I use PERFECT form and cannot see how someone can only spend 1 hour in the gym. I am in 1.5-2.25 weight only. It just seems to take that long for me. I have noticed though that my sets take 3 times as long as most everyone else around me. I satrt my set and the guy next to me is done with all his sets when Im just starting second. Example: curls=10 reps per set, 3 sets. Then concentration curls, then reverse curls. that alone takes me a long while. I try to train two muscle groups a workout. Chest-triceps/ shoulders-bicepts/ Legs-forearms/ back-neck. abs almost everytime. But I'm there never less than 1.5 ever. even when i say I am just gonna do a quick day... doesnt happen. I usually try to hit the muscles with at least 3-4 different exercices. maybe its too much.

People don't think I'm serious about bodybuilding because I only workout 3 days a week for about an hour and 15 minutes. When I tell them that I'm into bodybuilding they always say "Oh, so you must workout everyday for hours right?" Then I'm like "No, that's not necessary", but they cant understand. They think that you're building muscle every time you perform a rep, like it's magic or something. They don't know that growing occurs during rest with the consumption of a large amount of protien. ------------------

One intense hour of lifting is more than enough. I have read numerous articles that cite studies that show that androgen levels drop drastically after an hour, so exceeding 60 or so minutes becomes counterproductive. The pros may work out for 3 hours or so but the pros also have from 1 to 3 grams of test in their bloodstream, so a drop in their anabolic hormone levels is not a concern. If you're on, more than an hour may be okay, but I'd recommend no more than 70 minutes if you're off.
