The last post must've been deleted.

Anyways, I had posted that I read that we burn the most fat while we sleep so I asked if there are any foods we can eat that would accelerate the fat loss?

Jan replied that it is false.

However, in my readings I have read that it depends on your RMR, which is your resting metabolic rate. Furthermore, the RMR accounts for 60-75% of daily calorie expenditure so you'd think that you do burn the most fat while sleeping.

Am I thinking incorrectly?

Good topic. Here in Texas there is a product called "Slim-up-one" and it is to be taken a few mins before bedtime. It supposedly increases fat burning while sleeping, and the people around here are going nuts over the stuff.

I know nothing about this but...

I have noticed I always look leaner when I wake up in the morning. I always thought it was because you have no water retention when you wake up.

It may be due to fat burning as well considering you haven't eaten in 8-10 hours.

I've tried to figure this out myself. I reasoned that if I were without carbs, because that is my diet, I could eat a shitload of protein before I go to bed. That way, my body would have more protein for the nightly fast and it would have to burn calories processing the protein. Eat it cold and your body has to expend energy to heat it up inside you. I'd try to eat the leanest meat I could for this. You could have lean meat waiting for a 3am meal if you were dedicated, I am not. What do the rest of you think?

Your GH levels peak while sleeping. We all know about taking GH and fat loss. Same principle. I have read that food in your gut when you go to sleep, has an inhibiting effect on your ablity to reach deep sleep. Deep sleep is where GH release is highest. It is also known that Insulin and GH are antagonistic hormones. So when one is high, the other is low. If you eat any carbs or fast acting foods at night, you are going to experience an elevated insulin response. Which will in turn suppress your GH output. GH output alos peaks early in the night, so if your insulin levels are high, the overnight fat burn will be diminished. I was supprised to learn that whey protien, since it is so fast acting, causes an elevated insuling respones. So whey protien is a not a viable option before going to bed. For all of you who thought taking a protein shake before going to bed was a good idea... you guys are still right. It is just whey protien isn't a good choice, not only becuase it spikes insluin, but that it is so fast acting, that you still experience some muslce catabolizm.

Casien protien is the best thing you can eat 1-2 hours before you go to sleep. It is very long acting, and does not illict a high insulin response. Casien also expands in your gut, making you feel fuller.

Unfortanetly with all the whey protien hype, I haven't been able to find a powder form of just casien protien (if anybody knows of one please e-mail me). I get my casien by eating cottage cheese. It is the best thing you can eat before going to bed. It is naturally high in glutamine, low in tyrosine, high in protien, low on carbs, and low on fat. I usally have two servings... about 200 calories worth 1 hour before bed.

BTW if you want to optimize fat loss and GH output during your workout, same theory applies. Don't eat for a couple of hours before you workout, then have some casien protien, so that you don't go into a sever catabolic state during and post workout.
