I have read in 3 nursing manuals that when giving intramuscular injections one should draw a small amount of air into the syringe to pull the medication from the needle. Then invert the syringe allowing the air to go to the top. This small amount of air is then used to force the medication deep into the muscle and not allow the medication to seep out of the injection site.
Any comments please will be appreciated.

yes i heard that and will follow that procedure you can just flick the air to the top by holding it needle pointing down and make the air rise to the pluger end rather than pushing it out the otehr way!

The purpose of this technique is to not
waste the substance that is in the needle
when the plunger is fully depressed.
Ideally, when the plunger is all the way
down the air bubble would exactly reach
the tip of the needle. If you draw with
the needle side down and start with the
plunger fully depressed, you will have this
situation. I think if I had to choose
between wasting a little gear or injecting
air, I would wast the gear.

I always do it. Usally about 2/10ths of a cc of air does the trick. This ensures there is none of the drug wasted in the needle as there was nothing to force it out during injection. If you're not in a vein, which if you aspirate you'll know, it is a recomended practice to get all the sauce in your muscle.
