One of the girls I'm seeing was telling me this story about how she almost got fired from her EMT job because she forgot to aspirate when she gave some guy a shot. Evidently, if you do inject into a vein it can cause some major problems. She said it can cause blood poisoning, necrosis of the vein (it basically dies and rots), as well as a host of other complications. I'll be an aspirating fool from now on. I got all that out of her without her knowing that I use A/S. that is very true ajc... I'm a paramedic/flight nurse, and we ALWAYS have to aspirate when giving intramuscular injections.... otherwise, we would just give the med through the IV... that is the most important thing when injecting into a muscle... ASPIRATE ASPIRATE ASPIRATE!! it only takes a second, and could save your life!! RJ  | ||

My buddy whos an RN almost tore some nurse aid's head off when he didn't aspirate the syringe while giving his fiance a shot. They actually asked him to leave the room he got so pissed. p.s. I checked out your site. great info. | ||

I have been wondering this. Say you aspirate and get no blood than you start to push. What if when you push the juice in you hit a vein then.?I mean should you aspirate more than once say mid way through the shot. | ||

Curling.... only aspirate once... when you first stick... as long as you don't go pulling and pushing on the needle, you'll be fine... if you inject a little, then aspirate, the only thing you are gonna be pulling up is the gear you already injected.. sort of like "teasing"... but once is fine.... Nutz - go kick the doc in the groin!! Ive got a little 9 month old girl and it kills me when she has to get shots. If they dont switch pins after drawing and aspirate I kill them and burry them in my back yard. | ||

I use a #25 pin and with the gear being so thick and all I wonder if the blood would even be sucked into the needle when I pull back? Sometimes when I pull back nothing is pulled into the needle. Does the blood flow into a small pin like a 25 easily when you hit a vein? Thanks, | ||

Nutzz, what was he injected- it might have been SC (into fat tissue), since u have very little blood vescles running through the fat tissue | ||

yep, always aspirate, i hit a blood vessel the other day in my quad, when i pulled the pin out blood went everywhere, i'm just glad that i aspirated first or i'd have been sick as hell. | ||

Hope this is not a dumb question....I always aspirate, and have never pulled back and seen any blood. What do you do if you do pull back blood? Re-stick with the same pin or use a new one? | ||

I always aspirate when injecting into the delts, but I never do when injecting into my glutes because the 3 cc syringe is already clear full and I can't pull the plunger back any further. Maybe I should only be filling it with 2.5 cc so I can but then I would have to fill another syringe to inject the rest. Guess thats better then hitting a vein though! | ||

if the doc does not aspirate it is because he's shooting a drug thatcan be take both IM or into a vein. Many water based drugs are of this kind. Not oil based though... |
