Well, here's the story... At about 8:00pm tonight I got done reading posts here and went to my parents house to have dinner with my brother who just got out of prison today. I took my pit bull with me, like I normally do. My parents own my dogs mom and dad, and they grew up together and usually get along fine. Got in the door, noticed my dogs fathers hair was standing up. Before I knew what was going on, they were at each others throat. I managed to pull my dog off of his dad, who he had pinned to the ground by his throat. In the process, I stuck my left hand out to keep dad from coming at him, and got chomped....badly!!! I now have 4 massive puncture wounds in my left hand. Two on top, and two on the bottom of my hand. And they are between the knuckles, so now with 16 stitches in my hand, I can't make a fist without ripping the stiches out. Now the question is, how the hell am I gonna work out when I can't hold onto any weight with my left hand?? Doctor said it will be at least 2 weeks before they even think about removing the stitches. And with two of the punctures going almost clear through my hand, two weeks is doubtful. Luckily, no tendons, ligaments, or anything important were damaged. Any suggestions??? Slim PS: I'm supposed to play in a golf tournament in two weeks. Any 2 handicap or less golfers out there that want to play for me?!? IP: Logged |

what about maybe some wrist straps? Would they work for you? IP: Logged |

I hate to hear that pal. Try doing mostly machine exercises so that the grip of your affected hand can be lessened by the help of your good hand. For example, if you go to a bench press machine, you can probably do a fairly descent set for chest and you can more or less palm the handle with your affected hand. Too, you wouldn't need your bad hand to use a fly machine. I guess to sum my advice up, just stay away from free weights that will force you to isolate your bad hand. Use machines to help compensate. Good luck! IP: Logged |

work out your legs for sure and use machines for upper body, not free weights IP: Logged |

Depending on how bad it is.(did he just chomp, or chomp AND shake?) You could use an open handed grip and go light(higher reps)and slow on some of your training like bench and military presses. Also try a smith machine for these. On pulling movments try straps and/or machines. Or duct tape heh heh. And train the hell out of legs. You'll probably have to go lighter on much of it but train with a good partner and have him/her watch you close on presses. Two-three weeks probably isn't going to do much harm. Just my .02 Good luck with it. Sounds like you got away lucky, he didn't HAVE to let go. ------------------ IP: Logged |

No shaking thank god. Now that I've slept on it, if it would have been my dog doing the biting, my hand would have been crushed and mangled. He' a hell of a lot bigger than his dad and his head and mouth are almost twice as big. Thanks for the advice guys. Next time I'll just let them fight it out!!! Slim IP: Logged |

Use some machines they are not as good as free weights but you can push a lot of them with your palm and you don't have to grip it , like machine overheard presses and pec dec etc. Its better then not training at all. IP: Logged |

there is a lot to be said for just flexing- thats right slow hard extended contractions of the muscle with little or no weight- and stretching as well- stretching causes the release of various growth factors including igf-1 and can maintain muscle mass even in the absence of training-plus it can never hurt to be more flexible. ------------------ IP: Logged |
